Specifically This smith machine. It's quite cheap compared to the competition but I wonder has anybody tried it and how did it compare to a good solid smith machine from a gym? I don't expect it to feel like a piece of equipment costing 3X the price but is it rinky dinky? I am guessing nobody here has experienced yukon fitness stuff :(

Local stores want about $12000-1500 for a decent smith machine but I don't want to pay that much.

Sorry I cant be of very specific help, but from the stats on that page and my experience with similar machines, it's looks to be annoying narrow. At least for my arm span, the bar hits the rack at exactly the point where I'd want to grip for bench press. If you dont have a very big arm span it might be ok. Good luck!

Good point I'd not actually measured the span I'll have to do that against the nice smith machine at my gym!

No thanks, I use weights. Always have and always will unless something truly better comes out. Boflex from what I've heard is good but from what little I've heard of it by weight lifters it's not as good as weights. You can't do a whole whack of real excercises on a boflex (I mean there is lots you can do but a lot you can't do, like bench press).

Damn the Bowflex I'd need is like $2k anyway!

I agree. Although machines have come a long way, free weights are still superior. As Arnold says, our muscles are made to grow by overcoming gravity, which isnt always the case on a machine. He uses the example of pushing against a brick wall, you can push as hard as you want all day long, but it wont spur muscle growth.
I find all home devices to be kind of disappointing as well. Nothing beats a good gym. If you're stressed for time though, that device you linked looked fairly good.

Why are you wasting money on a smith machine?

Why not go for a power rack/squat rack?

Just curious.

As you can see it supports use of a free olympic bar as well. Mrsskoorb much prefers a smith machine for squatting/lunches though. It does add to the cost of course since a decent rack can be had for no more than $500.
