I came across this: http://wicd.sourceforge.net/ and I think it looks pretty good. It looks like it does everything Network Manager does and has at least one feature I'm missing in Network Manager.

I'm wondering if anybody uses this and has had any problems.

I used it for well, damn near seems like forever on my 700m before I got my macbook for christmas. I recommend switching to it from NM as soon as possible.

I just did the switch. It was in the ubuntu repos already, so I just installed it through Synaptec and it automatically removed network manager. After a reboot, it already puts up a tray icon and connects to wired and wireless just fine.

so far, so good.

My biggest complaint about Ubuntu was network-manager blowing chunks, at least with 9.04 it works for the most part. I might give wicd a try 🙂

For the life of me I could not get it to connect to an AP with a wep key. My previous post was after connecting to an AP with no security. Since I can't use WEP, I guess I'm going back to Network Manager. I just hate it that the NM in 9.04 connects to wired and wireless at the same time. It won't disconnect the wired connection when I connect to wireless and vice-versa.

How is this better than the default network manager in ubuntu 9.04? It's worked well for me so I'm hesitant to try this instead.
