...with a "regular" HSF, not with the Zalman FHS. Why couldn't I remove the fan from my CPU, and put a big ol' 92mm on the fan bracket and thus getting much more airflow over the CPU/northbridge and making my system quieter.

Anybody doing this or using the bracket?

Depends on the HS, some with very small gaps between fins might not like the extra distance from the fan. Most of the air could just go around the hs and not between the fins.

But for some it might work well. What HS are you thinking of trying it with?

I use the Zalman fan bracket on the flower heat sink.
I'm not sure how other heatsinks would perform if you
use the fan bracket since the fins of the flower hs extend
to less than 1/3 of an inch away from the fan.

Good point. Just a Taisol copper insert jobby. But would the extra CFM make up for the extra distance?

The extra CFM won't help if most of it is going around the heat sink. Part of the reason I like my zalman hs is that it cools my nb chipset and my ram with the air movement. But I'm skeptical about how well it would work with a smaller/denser fins arrangement.

But if you already have the other hs, try it and report back on how well it works. You've got me thinking about using my spare 92mm fan for my wifes retail amd 1.4 hs. That 60mm fan is starting to irritate me.

I think the zalman bracket comes with a 92mm fan - at least that's the way I read newegg's description.

That's what I'm trying to do right now, get rid of my 60mm HSF. I have an 80-60mm adapter that I'm trying today with a Panaflo L1A. I'll keep you posted as to what I find out!

So I have a few other things to try before I buy the bracket, that may not work, then it's a waste.

I use my Zalman with a low cfm panaflo, just to push some air over the NB. Works fine with me, I have tried taking the fan off my 8942 and just using the zalman bracket and a loud ass 92mm, kept temps about the same. Maybe a 1 or 2c increase

Well, I put this 80-60mm adapter on and my temps went down about 2-3 degrees and my system is quieter. Now I hear the hard drives and the !%&$ rattling GF4 fan. If amcdonald is reading this, I know you saif not to use this adapter, but I had to try it. :D The air that flows out the sides should be blowing on my northbridge and ram.

I still have this adapter on the way, I'll see if it makes any difference. So Memnoch, maybe get an adapter to ditch the 60mm fan, doesn't seem to worsen anything.
