Anybody use Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D two ring version

Does anybody shoot the Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D (two ring version, not push/pull version)? If so, how much of a issue is the lack of VR, especially if shooting by hand in natural light? Is the autofocus quick enough for catching children at play? What about High School sports?

I have this lens and have had good success handholding it. While I would love VR since I don't think I have the steadiest hands in the world, I haven't been handicapped by it's absense.
