Not for personal use. I was thinking today that it would be useful to have an intra-company instant messenger. It would cut down on a lot of emails and be easier to get several people in a conversation at once without calling a meeting. Plus not many have speaker phones. Would need to be able to block access to outside IM contacts so employees aren't IMing their friends all day.

Company has about 2000 people at this location.

I've used Lotus SameTime. It's pretty useful especially for coordinating with international offices.

Lotus Sametime. Very prominent (for obvious reasons if you knew my place of employment)... and very practical ... no fluff... just log in with your intranet ID and you're good to go. There's other releases of it which improve upon some features, but it's not available to anyone but us ... still, IMing colleagues is very much a part of our everyday business practice...

EDIT>> It also integrates with AIM... but I have Trillian at work also.

You'd think so, but really it hasn't. We often go on IM "conferences" with multiple people involved in any particular issue/project. It comes in very handy. Of course people also chat with friends within the company, but then again the Internet is readily available too... so it's not like there's no other distractions/detractions.

Basically a Sametime central server is what you need to set up first... and there's a connectivity tab in the Sametime clients (all employees would need to d/l this) where you enter the hostname/IP of that server as well as the port. I think that's all there is to it. Look it up...here.
