I've got a couple that have spent various time periods in my earthquake bag, winter kit (in the car), etc. Currently on a shelf in the pantry. They must be about 10 years old - wonder if they're still any good?

They were probably 10 years old when you got them.

Probably 😛
They were ok when I got them - opened one up so my ex could have the "MRE Experience"

I have had a few dozen of them and hate them all. Argh, they are terrible. The only thing I ever really liked in any of them was the strawberry spread on plain crackers/toast/whatever it really was.

My brother in law didn't eat them when he was in Iraq, he came back having lost like 20lbs of weight. They're not that bad, better than going hungry.

Depending where troops are deployed determines if they have to eat them. Most of the time overseas they can eat normal food in the tent cities.

They are ok if you will only be using them for a few days on a hiking trip. I once had to eat them for a little over 5 months, and they taste horrible after that long.

The vegetarian ones are the best bet.

actually, much of what you guys think you have eaten aren't true MREs, but a commercial version. Military-issue MREs are illegal to sell to the public. They are NOT what you bought at the Surplus store, or in most case, online. They do get sold occasionally on eBay and elsewhere, but the gov't is pretty serious about halting sales they find.

I had real MREs, straight from the military, after Katrina.

I also had a Miller 40 of....water.

thats different. A lot of people buy the things at a store and think they are the real thing.

Oh No, I have had the real thing

The one to watch out for is the one that has been nicknamed the Five Fingers of Death, also known as, The Beef Franks. You'll wish you were dead after eating them.

That was actually one of my favorites. You got the fake potato sticks with them.

When I left the Marines in '98, they were just phasing out the brown packaged MRE's and phasing in the Tan packaged MRE's. And being in the Marines, we were always the last to get new things, so I hadn't tried many of the tan packages.

My other favorite: Escalloped Potatoes with Ham, but only if it came with the cheese spread, and not the peanut butter.

I love MREs also.

Anyone know a cheap source of bulk (but varied) MREs? I need backpacking food, and don't feel like paying premium for Backpacker's Pantry, etc.

I've had them maybe ten times over the years, mostly on deployment exercises. Some are actually pretty tasty.

Anyone know what chemicals are in the little heater pack? Those things are amazing to me.

Isn't it just like magnesium mixed with water? My parents sells a bunch of Chinese/Japanese foods with that 'technology'.

My favorites are beef stew, chicken & rice, chilli mac, and spaghetti. The pound cake and crackers are pretty good too.

It tastes as good as any microwaved meal you get at the supermarket.

Hehe this is true. It just looks weird.

Freeze dried ice cream courtesy of the U.S. space program - tastes just like ice cream when it hits your mouth and you can eat as much as you want as fast as you want - without the "brain freeze" headache. 😉

Yea the freeze dried ice cream is cool.

I think that MREs taste better than most microwaved meals. Microwave dinners are crap.

It's hard to find the freeze-dried ice cream sandwich ones anymore.

The mashed potatoes in those microwave dinners could be used to glue stuff together in a bind. Hehe bind - talk about a pun.

I've never had MREs but have had C-Rations when I was a kid in Boy Scouts. They were not anything to write home about.

My favorite was the gum drop type candy.

Anyone remember that?

They're not bad. High in calorie count as someone said. Most, if not all, of the ones I've had included M&Ms.
