I have an HP Chromebox Q150 that I've upgraded with 8GB of RAM (from 4) and a 120GB SSD (from 16). Recently, our school took away the old Windows desktops in our room,
and replaced them with chromebooks with tiny screens that are desk level, instead of face level. It's very hard to see, and I really hate the keyboard.
I remembered that I had a couple of the Chromeboxes in the closet from a sale last year, so I upgraded the ram & storage. The thing is really speedy! In fact, it seems about twice as fast as the chromebooks, even though the technology in there is probably 8 or 9 years old. It is definitely a lot faster than the old desktops we had running Windows 7 last year.
Anyway, I found myself wondering if I could put VLC Media Player on it. It seems that the chrome version has been removed. This chromebox is evidently not getting new updates any more, so it is running chrome os version 76. I wondered if there might be some way to sideload an apk on it, and found references to using something called Brunch, along with the latest version of the Chrome OS.
However, there doesn't seem to be a lot of info online about this, or reviews from folks who have done it. It APPEARS that doing this would open up Google Play on there, and allow me to install the Android version of VLC Media Player. Has anyone successfully done this using Brunch on an old Chromebook or Chromebox? If so, I would like to hear about your experience.
Thanks!
