Anybody totally not happy with Lenovo? (at work)

What model is your friend's ThinkPad?

t41, t61... something like that. He got it about 2 years ago I think, maybe 1.5, and performance wise it was/is pretty good, just not crazy about the build quality.

Y530 is older, discontinued and it is consumer product which is why you probably will not see Lenovo make the investment in supporting 64 bit drivers on it. Not any different from other vendors in this aspect in regard to their older products.

That said, how many drivers are native to the win7 64bit install for that platform... In other words, what are you missing? You can probably find them right from the OEMs for the various sub-components in that system.

it wasn't old and discontinued when i purchased it. I know its a consumer product too, I didnt realize that this hate thread was only for their enterprise solutions. I'm sure that i can fish through for all the Win7 64 drivers when the time comes, but it seems like the GF is happy w/ Vista 64 for the time being.

Had no problems that I recall with my T60. Couple of times it's taken a pretty bad slap/hit, no evident issues. Over 3 years old. Yes, I rarely take it anywhere, but it's been a tough cookie so far. I wasn't impressed with the prices of parts, and their support disappeared when the warranty was up (one year), but AFAIK that's par for the course (?).

I thought the guy I dealt with on the phone (several times) when I bought my T60 was just great. As a point of contact and help resource he seemed perfect. I don't recall him putting me on hold and transferring me to someone else. He addressed my issues directly and personally. Like I say, this was 3+ years ago.

This isn't a hate thread....Only a couple here make it so. True - When you purchased that 530, it was probably current (Unless you bought it through a Lenovo Channel partner, then all bets are off).

However, you probably bought it well before the Win7 launch and if it wasn't current during the Win7 launch, that is probably the #1 reason you won't see drivers from Lenovo for it....Hint - Lenovo would have posted them already. 🙂

That is not the same strategy with the commercial ThinkPads though. They are supporting WIN7 back to the ThinkPad 61 series, and the ThinkCentre M55 desktops... On the M55's all the drivers are supplied by the Win7 install except for the audio driver, which has to come from Lenovo's site.

you know what sucks. Lenovo took their sweet time with SLIC2.1 where everyone else moved up before the deadline - this makes upgrading to win7 using royalty oem cd's more difficult (bios flash maybe) - where as the hp and dell it was matter of putting a disc in and having it handle its business since it detected slic2.1

Complete non-issue. SLIC in OEM systems is tied to the specific OEM code for preloads and not other "OEM" install disks. You are free to upgrade to WIN7 on any system. The difference? You can not take a VIsta or Win7 OEM "preload" and install it on a system that did not ship with the appropriate COA on the bottom/side of the unit....

Don't bitch at the hardware vendor about that...Bitch at Microsoft.

I might add, any attempt to get around Hardware OEM pre activation, or to use HardwareOEM preactivation on a generic OEM copy of Vista or 7 or retail copies is considered piracy.

it's just easier to manage a single slic based key in small business - you know what i mean.

large business just use their enteprise agreement and sysprep their images from distribution channel.

I need 50 CONFIG A lenovo , 100 CONFIG B - imaged, delivered tomorrow - no problemo. no point in imaging your systems in house once you reach a certain size.

but the little guys - slic is very helpful. one vista/win7/server 2008 disc can be used to recover any system. small might be a business of < 50-100 computers.

I am saying for pure recovery purposes - slic rocks. no activation rocks. nothing to do with piracy just not having to deal with activation because someone changed a motherboard and cpu out due to failure . after all time is money.
