Anybody speak 'MSN'?

My daughter recently upgraded her MSN's dial-up software to the latest version (on her notebook running Win2K). Since doing so, MSN takes MINUTES to load (from the time she clicks the icon to the time she has internet access)! :Q

Any ideas as to the bottleneck???

Yes. It's called MSN! Not a big help, I know, but I have seen this on several computers (takes over 3 minutes from click to connect) and haven't been able to figure it out.

Sorry I can't help but I can sympathize.

I don't believe that you must use MSN's dialer to connect to their service. I believe you can use native Win2K dial-up and achieve better results.

I agree with hausdave try and setup a normal dialup connection. They always work better when you can use them.

Start->settings->network and dial-up connections click on "make new conneciton" you have to be able to supply certain information like DUN, UID, PWD, etc. There should be some information on this at the microsoft knowledge base

All you need in Win2k and 98/Me is the access # and type in MSN/username and password. Windows will automaticly set up the rest.

When I see her this weekend, I'll try bypassing MSN's dialer as discussed. What's chances that I will create some conflict in doing that???

It also occured to me that since my daughter upgraded her prior version of MSN software with the latest version, and she never had a slow-load problem before - perhaps there are some erroneous (old) MSN entries in Win2K's registry causing the slow-down. What do you think?

Just uninstall the msn dialer. You will lose the spam filtering software though when you uninstall the msn dialer.

I remember in MSN, you have to enter another segment to your user name to connect via DUN.

I think it might be msn/usernamehere

Not sure though.

Reinstall the MSN dialer, You should not have any problems though. I run MSN without the MSN dialer in Win2k without any problems and it connects right up. As I already posted before type in MSN/and your account name in the user box.

I'll definitely try the dialing 'work-around' this weekend when I see her. I presume that once I do this, there won't be a problem creating a new 'MSN' shortcut icon on her desktop?

I gather that you don't think bad registry entries have anything to do with this problem?

No MSN just added in more spyware to the MSN dialer and removed the never dissconect feature. Making a shortcut to MSN from your Network and dialup settings folder in the control panel is easy and you wont have a hard time figuring it out. Just remember to write down the local access # and try them all to see what # gives the the best connection speed and stick with that #.

Thanks to everyone for your help... After using DSL for the past two years, I've forgotten how annoying dial-up can be!

Interesting thread, but apart from the dialer, any ideas how to reduce the long delay from the time you click on the "butterfly" to the time you get the msn access screen???
