Well they kept it in the GBA version! It was supposed to be a glitch in ff1 for NES but I guess to pay homage they kept it in the GBA version :D

edit: However, the monsters aren't as high as in the NES version.

Cool. I usually go the opposite route, by playing the ship game over and over until I have enough money to buy silver swords and stuff, and then go through the game at really low levels.

You know, we've discussed it before at the GameFaqs boards, and I'm not so sure it wasn't intentional. I mean, they even put a port there for seemingly no reason if it wasn't so you could have easier access to the spot.

well I know in the FF1 for NES it was only the 2 top most squares. it seems in the GBA version it's about 4 squares large. In NES version, the monsters were from the same as the continent above (monsters assigned to zones, zone overlapped unintentionally with the bottom continent?)

At any rate, playing this on the GBA emulator is much better (I can speed up the battles and the dialogue :))

Way back when I would always spend 3-4 hours in the Hall of Giants in the Earth Cave. Easy way to gain a few levels and gain a TON of gold. Man I miss FF1.

Pretty sure it was all four squares on the original NES version. Off to check gamefaqs.com...

EDIT: This guy says it's three squares:

There is now a great chance for you to advance several levels ahead of where you currently are, but I would recommend against it at this time, but I will list it anyway. From Provoka, head a little towards the south and then east until you see a port to the north. From there head north past the port and you'll pass through a forest and there should be a small pennisula at the end of the land. The top two squares on the pennisula and one more underneath it have some EXTREMELY tough monsters here, but if you manage to defeat them, you can net several hundred exp and several thousand gold per kill.

EDIT: This guy says it's all four:

Now, go southeast a little bit from Provoka, until your see a port to the North. Make your way Northeast until you come to a Peninsula. The top 2x2 squares contain REALLY powerful enemies.

EDIT: And this guy says two:

Due to a bug in the game, the top part of this (two-block wide) peninsula contains FrWOLFs, GIANTs, TYROs, and other relatively stronger enemies.

I still say it's four :D
