Anybody Recommend a Router for DC That Wont Lock UP?

This RT 314 is killing me. Have to reset it 10 times a day running Linux nodes... sigh

Is it DHCP issues or have you isolated it?

I have a Dlink and SMC that both work fine w/ a couple linux clients

Hi Jatwell, Im not sure what it is but seems to be possibly DHCP. All I know is that it will run all the nodes for some time and then lock out the internet. It has been doing this 2- 20 times a day. I have had the prob with Windows plus Linux or all Linux. Have not seen it with windows only but I only had 2 nodes on it when they were all windows. getting very frustrated trying to keep them all up on the net. Current config is netgear 4 port switch uplinked to Netgear RT314 with its own 4 port switch. It happens when using the router alone, or combined with the second switch. Others have told me they have simiilar problems with the Netgear.

I guess you've got the latest and greatest firmware revision?

If so, it probably wouldn't hurt to just try a different brand. You can pick up a Linksys or SMC off the FS/T forum for around $35-$40 pretty easy. In fact I got a wireless router and was going to sell my SMC wired router, but I think I'm going to get rid of the wireless setup because I'm really not going to use it and I just don't like the security issues with it. I'll probably just add a larger switch.

Linksys or SMC would be my best choice to try, altough this wireless Dlink router hasn't given me a bit of trouble either and I have a mixed Win/Linux setup of computers...

Thanks for the suggestions Jatwell. I may be looking for you to offer one up for sale. I really liked the Netgear till this started happening. However I havent updated the firmware for awhile so I guess I should do that first.

Been running my Linksys with my cable modem for close to two years with no issues at all. I'm using it for both DHCP and the firewall capabilities - very simple to setup and they're relatively inexpensive too.

could it ba a cablemor contact problem also? Look in where they plug in and switch a few cables around. My linksys is good also.

I'm not a big router man myself, but i know of a free linux router which is easy to set up and use called "FREESCO".

Probably no help, but worth a try..

Thanks for the tips and suggestions... I may just try a Linksys. I got this one because of the hardware firewall but performance is what I need with the herd getting larger. I need at least 8 ports now.

BTW I have tried many new cables, cat5 and cat5e

I have a Netgear "router" that I use on my gaming LAN that has been running solid for over a year now. I also have a Linksys "router" that has been running on my DC project LAN that has been running solid for almost 4 years now. I can also attest to the quality and versatility of building a router using LRP.

I like my LinkSys BEFSR41 - 4-port router

mastertech01 - you just need to hang a hub or switch off your current router. Do I owe you some cables?

I agree with GeoffS... I own a BEFSR41 and know no less than 6 other people that own one as well. None of us have ever had any problems. Now, on the other hand, my SMC Barricade that I owned locked up constantly.... a real POS but maybe I just got unlucky.

I may look into a Lynksys then... I have had no problems till I started using more than two nodes on the switch.

Geoffs since I last spoke with you in regards to a switch I picked up a 4 port Netgear with 5th "one link" auto uplink. It was good for adding more nodes but my problems have not decreased at all. I got it from a damned Canadian.. LOL Just kidding my friend. He also was kind enough to provide me with 4 new 20 foot cat 5 cables. Another friend of the family gave me 3 cat 5 e cables as well so I think Im good there. That was from good ole edblor.. a great trader on the forums.

I have a working P1 110 setup hidden somewhere that I could make a home made router from I suppose..

A P100 is a bit overpowered for a home router. The old Cisco router I have uses a 80486DX25 for it's processing power. :Q

I can tell you from experience that the more you play around on a home network with DC stuff, the more you want to put up a server and have access to stats and such from the outside world. The easiest way to do that is with something along the lines of a LRP box. The documentation for them is outstanding and you will get to learn more about small footprint *nix at the same time.

SpeedStream 5660 if you're doing xDSL. My dsl provider only does PPOA, which sucks. The router will actually do PPOE, PPOA, Bridge mode & RAS. I had to use the No-IP.com client so that I could server up web pages from home but it works great.

I have a dlink Di-704P. only 4 ports/1 printer port, but you could get the 8 port version.

Thanks for all the tips friends.. Im also exploring the idea that it may be in part to some of these antique ISA network cards. I picked up some new PCI cards and will begin integrating them into the systems to see if that helps. Things sure have changed in prices, I got these PCI versions 10/100 auto negotiation low profile for less than 7.00 each at a local PC store. I put one in a new build last night and Mandrake took it right in with no problems. Some of my ISA cards I had to try numerous drivers to even get to work.
