I recently acquired one in a trade for my mp3 player + cash and while it works just fine it has one peculariarity that I'm trying to figure out. Some of the CDs that I listen to as well as the music on my playlist doesn't have the 2 second gap that it looks for so that it can add a track marker. No big deal since it allows you to add them manually. For some strange reason though it will not allow me to add the markers after the music has been recorded. I go to add a marker where it is needed and it flashes a 'PROTECTED' message on the display for some odd reason. Yet I can edit track names, album names, delete songs or the entire minidisc without that flashing. All the instruction manual says about the message is that it means the write protect tab has been switched to read only which it apparently has not been. Could it be the minidiscs I'm using somehow? I am currently using some Memorex minidiscs.Help is appreciated.

I think for already-recorded discs on Sony units, you have to pause then add the trackmark. It shouldn't work on-the-fly.

That's what the instructions say and that's exactly what I do. Right when it needs a mark I pause it and hit the T mark button on the unit. Flashes that protected message.

I have an older MZ-R55, and I hit the track mark button while it's playing. It will flash "T-mark" and moves on to the next track. There shouldn't be a problem with the minidiscs, but you can give that a shot. Hope this helps.
