Most people I know either love dogs or at least tolerate them. I seem to be one of the few who would really rather they just not be around me period. I don't hate them by any means, but they mean about as much to me as the squirrels running around in my yard.

And yes, I've had several pet dogs growing up and they were sweet enough.

I don't like them either. Maybe if they are quiet and calm and keep to themselves. But slobbering, hyper dogs, ewww, no.

There was this one adorable dachshund I came across a while ago that I loved for some reason.

i dislike dogs in general and like certain dogs in particular. but i swear to god, i will never walk around behind anything and pick up it's shit ever again...one weekend dog sitting for a friend was enough. what ridiculously misguided behaviour. if i asked you to clean up my shit for me because i like to shit wherever i please, would you do it? no? then why would you do it for an animal?

Because it IS an animal? It's all right, dogs and pets in general are not for everyone.

I'm guessing you've never had kids.

Dog, man's best friend.

I used to dislike dogs. But I've spent some time with a dog that's been well-trained, and have found myself very impressed.

The owner makes all the difference.

I like the first two responses. Here's another: You wouldn't make a very good mod. :p

So, just dogs or animals in general?

Animals in general. In fact, I love them (dogs, cats, all animals) out in nature where they are supposed to be. I do not like the idea of having any pets mostly due to the fact that I just do not want animals around me, but I guess in a more big picture idea I think that keeping any animals caged up (be it in an actual cage, or inside your house or yard) is rather cruel.

I don't mind most dogs, some can be annoying but I like most animals in general. However I'd take a cat over a dog 100% of the time.

My mother was like that and she grew up on a farm. Of course, she was crazy. :)

She got better in later years but, couldn't see her way to caring for an animal when her own health was going down hill.

Some critters definitely do belong away from humans though. I cringe every time I see one of the parks in Japan with monkeys interacting with people.

What would be the difference between that and a dog? The dog being more domesticated (makes sense, but you could breed out the wild traits of the monkey and over time domesticate it as well)?

And farms are where humans and animals should coexist since there is an obvious reason, but an apartment is not a farm.

I don't trust them. Large dogs could fuck you up if they decided to. People have a wierd attitude about their own dogs too. Its always "he's just a big sweetheart, he'd never hurt anyone...". They're all absolutely honestly bumfuzzled when it turns out that, under some circumstances, fido is perfectly willing to hurt someone. In practically every dog attack, the owners never see it coming. They never see any signs of any impending danger in the behavior of the dog.

Think about that, large dog owners. Right now you're reading this post thinking " this obviously doesn't apply to my sweet big ol teddy bear of a dog, aww he's so cute *snorgle*". I'm telling you that the very same wool that was pulled over the eyes of countless loving dog owners whose dogs ended up hurting someone is currently obscuring your vision. Perhaps it obscures all our vision. Maybe you just can't tell. No matter how sweet and loving and wonderful your dog is, he might snap one day, and you might not be any smarter than the other people who didn't see it coming. Just think about it.

Edit: Also, I have a cat. If one day, my destruction becomes her sole purpose in life, I'll just stomp her to death or something. My motto is don't own an animal you can't stomp to death in a pinch.

The trade-off is that these animals live a much better and healthier life in captivity than they would in the wild. They get regular food, instead of going thru the feast/famine cycles. They get medical care when needed, so that things like heartworm and diseases carried by ticks and fleas are prevented.

LOL. My 110lb Ridgeback is the biggest whimp. My mini-dachshund(the one in my avatar) would be a bigger concern than my big dog. Walking them today, my big dog must have been petted by about twenty people, even going up to children to get a pet on the head.

Obviously, you've never been around a lot of dogs and watch the news too much. Too funny.

Ridgebacks are such beautiful dogs. I've been tempted to get one. :)

You are applying a human perspective of well being to something that isn't human. Yes they are fed regularly and will probably live longer, but for all we know that creature is absolutely miserable being caged up and not being able to run wild, hunt, mate, etc.

Well, aside from being two totally different animals, monkeys and primates are too smart for our own good. That and, an enraged 40 pound monkey could literally rip your arm off and beat you to death with it before you bled out. Dogs want to be around people and, they want to be given jobs.

I guess it comes down to appreciating a closer link with nature while knowing some species are better admired from afar. The good thing is knowing this about yourself and not getting a pet for other reasons.

My dogs would prefer to be sleeping on the couch to being out in the wild. I don't think you understand but dogs are domesticated animals.

What you're saying is exactly what I said. You won't see it coming. Your dog's perceived demeanor may not even factor into it. Maybe nothing will happen, but if something does, you'll just be another confused guy saying "but he was always so sweet...". You'll probably tell the same story then too, about how everyone was able to pet it while you were walking it. It means nothing.

I'm mindful and aware of high risk litigation hazard dogs. Insurance Companies have a short list of high risk litigation probable dogs..is your dog on the list??
