Anybody know why Toyota engineers designed it like this?

It's an auto transmission with electronic manual shift. If I leave it in auto the transmission uses all 5 gear speeds. When I shift it into manual mode the transmission only allows 2-5. Not that it's a problem but just wondering why it was design this way.

1st gear is readily available in a true manual. How does removing 1st in a auto help protect the customers?

Because most auto morons tend to have a lead foot when it comes to applying gas when at a full stop. Prevents redlining
