Some older models, such as the Tritton T-NAS can be upgraded. Also, unlike most cheapie new NAS devices, the Tritton runs EXT3 instead of FAT32 file system, which is more efficient in terms of slack space, and doesn't have file number and file size limitations of FAT32.
Old 333 mhz system + cheap ide raid card = cheap file server. I have a 10 250gb fileserver here that cost me about $1300 for everything. Not bad for 2 TB of RAID 5 storage.

Not bad not bad. But I was thinking of something along the lines of this.
But I'm looking for one that's an IDE interface, not SATA. I already have a Server 2003 box in an Antec Sonata case that just sitting downstairs. Thinking about adding my IDE hard drives to it and just creating a share through gigabit.
