So my neighbor next door helped push me as he's replacing his. I'm over our current one as it's rough, difficult to slide and the lock mechanism is jacked up, track is so hard to keep clean, etc.

I like the ones with the blinds "inside" the dual panes. Pretty cool, clutter free & hopefully much higher quality.

Anywho.....I don't know what he found at Lowes but they quoted him $2k installed. (doh!) Our current sliders are 70.5" wide (houses built in '96) and current trend is 72" (or so I'm told).

Here's what I was looking at -----> http://www.homedepot.com/p/JELD-WEN...red-Tilt-Raise-Blinds-Glass-8b6775/203661529/

Any suggestions?

We replaced ours with an Andersen. Still works like new 16 years later. In my experience with Jeld-Wen, it's cheap budget brand. I installed two of their windows in my garage, but I wouldn't put them in my house. No where near the quality of the Andersen's.

Thanks no Tine.

I was wondering if that wasn't the case but hadn't dug much yet. (My old man's a contractor but lives far away & is retired but may give him a ring this weekend).

The Lowe's estimator that went to my neighbor's house led him to believe our 70.5" doors were undersized & would require *extra* work to chisel the framing to allow for the 72" doors.

I measured the opening myself at the opening of the actual glass door's frame and definitely get the 70.5" but can easily see the 72" being proper as only another 3/4" per side could easily be inside that frame.

We paid $2k for our dual pane doors, same issue I think, size wasn't standard. Made a huge difference in sound, likely temperature as well.

Sliding doors piss me off. I like French doors, and would get that if/when I have to replace my slider.

I totally hear you, but in my case slider is best for location, room, etc.

Definitely will consider other brands too. Would loooooove to have a nice, smooth sliding door with the built-in blinds, nice quiet sound (though my current slider is dual pane, it's just 1996 technology & probably bottom of the barrel tract-house stuff).

Jeld Wen is ok, as are most of the inexpensive vinyl sliders. The internal blinds are cool, but if a string breaks you have to replace the entire glass panel.
The 70.5" frame dimension would be about right for 6' RO. I'd guess a standard door will fit. Mind the height though, there is some variation there as some doors are made to retro fit as well.

Given that your existing door is a 96, you could probably find new hardware for it and save yourself a bunch of money.
