Anybody know of any good careers for lawyers who don't want to be lawyers anymore?

I hate being a lawyer. It is THE shittiest job ever. Long hours. Ungrateful, ignorant clients. Incessant, mind-numbing whining.

Any ideas? I seriously need out. This is my cry for help.

You could be a politician.

Don't EVER become a loan officer or a mortgage broker.

It is an overcrowded, boring profession which is chock full of social idiots.

The pay is ok, but it takes a few years. When the bucks start rolling in, you begin to trade your life for it. Quite frankly, I don't think that it is really worth it.

Figure out what is important to you. Then choose carefully.

as someone already stated, you could teach, it'd be rewarding I think, even if the pay isn't as good as being a full lawyer.

Like the above said. You can become a politician. Or, go back to school & get your MBA, but you still have to deal with ignorant morons.

Have you considered a career as an ocean dweling carnivore that dines on fish? Or maybe a blood sucking parasitic organism that lives in swamps?

Oh wait thats your CURRENT job!

I recommend you find a job doing something you love doing, then it's not work.

Hmm, this is rather disturbing. I was thinking about applying to law school - studying for the LSAT now. I have worked for nearly five years as a chemist (pay sucks) and thought hell how about chemical patent law, environmental law, biotech law - science type intellecutal property stuff.

But, I have heard also, that there has been an increase in law school applicants; that has made competition a bit more stiff.

The field is super crowded, and few are retiring thank to the recent stock slide. A lot of retirement accounts have been hit hard. Patent law is interesting as well as challenging. Just remember that you have to sit for 2 bar exams - the state bar and the patent bar.

Consider moving to a different kind of practice. I have always enjoyed criminal litigation, both as a prosecutor and (currently) as a defense attorney. I have generally really liked being a JAG officer, but it is hard to seriously recommend joining one of the JAG departments when our present regime, SecDef Rumsfeld in particular, is openly hostile to military attorneys and working to downsize the respective departments.

Are you in BigLaw, MidLaw, or small? Are you a transactional attorney or a litigator? If the former, how's the in-house market where you are and if the latter, have you considered govt. jobs?
