Anybody know of a link to instructions on how to put a HSF on a T-bird without shims?

Please... need it for a friend. I would help her, but i haven't used a T-bird yet (and i'm not even there physically to help).

If you don't know how to install HSF properly, buy retail, it has 3 years easy to abuse warranty directly from amd.

Sweet... yeah, i'm trying to find out whether it's retail or OEM... she's getting the combo deal of the Athlon 1700XP w/ ECS K7S5a from Frys.

it's probably retail. most of fry's bundle's have retail cpus.

i got that bundle from fry's also.

nope.

do it right and pick up some arctic silver II thermal paste. should be about 6 bucks online, maybe a little more in stores if you can find it

it has a thermal pad on the hsf.

if your friend isn't familiar with putting together a computer and installing hsfs. the pad will be easier, not as effective, but decent for non overclocked setups.

yeah, the pad will work, just won't work as well as ASII

In any case, the IMPORTANT thing to remember about that pad is that there is almost always a thin plastic cover over it....you MUST remove this before mounting the HSF...otherwise your t-bird goes up in smoke.
