Anybody know if I should/shouldn't use a direct box for a microphone?

For a guitar btw . . .

I heard that a microphone signals don't need a direct box, only pickup signals. Anybody know?

We always use D/I boxes in between XLR cables going from our mic's (we mic our guitar amps) back to the snake.

Never on VOCAL mics, but always on guitar mics.
