Anybody know if DVD players will read VOB files off of CD's?

I'm interested in having a set of DD/DTS demos for use in my wannabe home theater system.

I have many DVD's with both DD and DTS demos, & they're easily separable from the movie.

If I burn a VOB file & a corresponding IFO file onto a CDR (the demos are short enough they fit easily on a CD), will a DVD player play them?

Any idea how that would be?

I just did one with a VOB file (that played in Power DVD) and an IFO created by DVD Decryptor (no clue of that is valid).

The DVD player just said that type of disc was not playable.

have you tried burning it in the latest copy of Nero? I know nero now supports DVD burning....you might be able to fool it if DVD authoring requires special layers or something of the nature...

Sweet, now I just hope my player will do it...

Mine's not listed, but I suppose it's worth a shot.

:)

Thanks for the links.

Viper, what model is it? Pretty much every single player on the market has reviews on that site.

Panasonic DVD-RP62

I suppose I could always go buy a DVD burner, that would be the guaranteed fix.

User reviews One guys said that he couldn't play miniDVDs. Others differed... Since it plays a myriad of formats like xvcd and xsvcd I think it will be a good shot. Try it!

First, DVD's are encrypted so you would have to decrypt it first (no problem)
Second, VOB's are usually .99GB which is more than a CD can hold.
Third, I believe you need more than just the VOB file. You need some sort of TOC.

Did you click on my links? It's possible I've seen it done. It's very inconvinient imo though.

The things I'm ripping are very short (20 second DTS demo). Eventually I would like to do full movie trailers, but I'll start with small stuff.

Viper, you don't neccessarily need dvd format for demos/trailers. You can create svcd demos/trailers which will work fine. You can also encode them with 5.1 audio for home theatre purposes :) I did several of these for THX tests/audio tests ;) . My favorite that I did is the small THX test from Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition-- the one with the liquid metal forming the THX logo. On the same disc I also included the drainage chase scene (awesome sound there) and breathtaking video to boot (anyone remember this?)

My DVD player won't play SVCDs.

My latest attempt didn't give me any errors, but wouldn't play either.

My first two attempts said the media type was not playable, the third one simply sits at the main menu & won't play anything.

I recommend buying a DVD player that plays VCDs. I got one for like $50 and it works very nice.

Mine will play VCD's fine, but it does not play SVCD's.

Not many do, & I'm not willing to sacrifice the good things about my DVD player to get SVCD capability.

Video quality is much more important than the ability to play every format under the sun.

Are you only after audio or is video important to you as well? If you can stand the infrerior video quality of vcds I *beleive* you can encode them with 5.1 audio. I know this is possible for svcds with special tools but not sure about vcds as I don't use these.

I would prefer to have both audio and video unedited.

Pure uncompressed bliss then! ;) Then try to create that miniDVD I told you about. Report back if you do decide to go that route.
