Anybody know how you go about getting a top secret clearance level?

I was looking through some job ads, and more then a few of them required top secret security clearance. I am assuming these were government jobs, didn't pay too much attention since it wasn't anything that interetsed me. But it got me thinking, how exactly does the average Joe get this?

Usually you get one through an employer. I don't know if you can get one on your own. Another thing is that when you leave a job you usually lose your clearance. You get it back when you start a new job tho you still may have to go through the whole process again.

<-- in the process of getting a clearance.

yea what he said... it's just in the ad to let you know that you should be completely clean because they'll do a background check and everything

Well that makes sense. I am not worried about it myself. It would be cool to have, but not worth the trouble. Not to mention the FBI will prolly be watching you closer then most people. Just had me wondering, thanks.

Also if you apply to the CIA or any org like that they do a full background check on you. I applied to the CIA a while ago, hell of a lot o paperwork! 🙁

It costs around $100,000 to get a Top Secret Clearance. I wouldn't recommend getting one on your own, even if you could.
