Anybody know how to unfreeze (hard reset?) a Sony PSP ?????

So a friend of my wife's wants me to unbrick her son's PSP. FWIW, it's a camoflauge 3001 no memory card in it and they can afford to lose all. I told 'em I'd give it a try.

I've youtubed some stuff, but none of those worked. Is there a way to hard reset these things?

P.S. It powers up but as soon as it gets to the first screen "Sony Entertainment Group" it plays the first 2 notes of the music & then freezes right there so, ya, doesn't even boot all the way up.
