Anybody know how the bomb squads "bomb box" works?

Forgive the term bomb box, but I don't actually know what it is called. I'm sure you have seen it in movies, maybe even on the news. It is the container that they put a bomb in that allows the bomb to detonate safely without harm or damage to the surroundings. Anybody know what its actually called or how exactly it works?
 
I think it's basically just a big steel drum. It directs the force of the blast upward out the top so it's less likely to cause damage.
 
I haven't seen that barrell one, but i have seen one that looks like a 7-10 foot sphere with a hatch and it's like a foot thick, so it absorbs the blast. Could be wrong, but it's domething that i've seen.
