anybody know how nextel sim cards work?

so i just bought this phone off of ebay...it's been activated before. someone told me that i wouldn't be able to activate it due to a used sim card. the person i bought it from did get it/sell it legally and i bought it legally. why wouldn't i be able to tell nextel that i bought this phone and want it activated? it's not reported stolen or anything.

IMHO they'll give you a new SIM card when you activate your service.
