Anybody know anything else about wireless electricity for the home?

I remember seeing an article about some upper echelon Home Depot guy striking out on his own with this invention he patented. I dont remember what exactly it was, but it promised a wireless electrical home, wireless from the utility pole. Outlets would be able to be moved around wherever they were needed , and you wouldnt have to be an electrician to install them because they would basically be boxes you could carry around the house and plug things into them. I thought they were going to test market it somewhere in the northwest, but I've lost track of it. Anybody know?

With my luck one of my neighbors would "hack" my electricity with a rogue power outlet.

Tesla had this idea over a hundred years ago. A lot of his work proved that it wasn't efficient and in a lot of cases, very dangerous and not possible to transmit a substantial current through the air. This is essentially what a tesla coil does, though, just FYI.

Oh, yeah, I was going to put a Tesla byline in my post, but forgot. This guy was in the Atlanta Journal newspaper's business section about 2-3 years ago and had an actual working setup of this wireless dealie. He was supposed to test it somewhere, I believe, out west and the government was very interested in it. Wait a minute......... ;>)

From what I understand the wireless transmission of power is possible but very dangerous (ie it would kill you)

I'd be interested to see anything on this guy and his invention?

There's a working Tesla coil at a Fry's somewhere in norcal (or at least there used to be). The fire it up ever few hours to power up a neon sign. Never killed anyone. For low voltage (?) stuff I'm sure it would be quite harmless.

Sorry, I thought we were talking here about having homes powered with NO CORDS from the pole on the sidewalk. As far as I know, that would kill you. Unless you only run neon signs in your house, in which case, you are set. Though they don't do a great job of keeping beer cold... ;)

You dummies, it's induction. Search for it using induction in google. I've seen the patent but too lazy to search it for you guys now.

Ah, I missed where it said wireless from the pole to the house

Oh, and of course I only light my house with neon signs and lights. What kind of square are you :p

Oh yeh, the losses are incredibly high. There is a patent that has a desk that can power your computer and accessories through induction.

Check out what has been done though:

That is indeed "wireless" in the most basic sense of the term - without wires - like an electric toothbrush. But you still have to put it on the "hotspot" or whatever its called.

I believe what is being discussed here is the wireless transmission of power like we already have wireless internet and wireless telephones.... As in walking around your house with something and having it powered wherever you go.

Bah. Just electrically charge the earth. Then we just need to plug our stuff into the ground.

Yep,kinda like that. Man , I wish I could find the damn article. The guy even said that the house would have no wires and that the box on the pole would be wireless too. I thought of induction too, but I dont think that it was the premise. You would think it had to be though, huh?
