I just found a brown recluse in our company's snack area. I dated a girl that was bitten by one of these things, and her arm swelled up horribly. My co-worker captured it and let it go outside. The distinctive feature of this critter is the violin-shaped mark.

Ok, so did I mention I'm bored?

No, for then you would have huge amounts of mosquito's and flys' and gnats' and other crappy bugs.

Course, I can do without the black widows and recluse's of the world :)

I've been the victim of a Brown Recluse bite on two seperate occasions. The Recluse is different from other spiders in that their venom is not really "toxic". It's an enzyme (sp?) that causes the tissue that it comes in contact with to die (referred to as necrotic). The wound is ugly. The scar isn't pretty either. I know, I have two of them.

Recluse bites are strange things. You don't feel the bite itself. At some point minutes after the bite took place you notice a itching at the site and there will be a number of small raised bumps. In a day or two the bumps develope a fluid filled "head" kind of like a pimple. A day or two after that the skin begins to turn black and peel off. Like I said NOT PRETTY! The sooner the victim gets medical attention the less damage there will be. Depending on the location of the bite and if allowed to continue to kill tissue they can be deadly.

This is going to sound weird but... The best therapy for a recluse bite is the application of a paste of "Adolf's Meat Tenderizer" applied directly to the bite. Something about the various enzymes in the Adolfs helps counteract the enzymes in the spider's venom.

The bottom line on Recluse bites is... If you suspect that you've been bit by one see a doctor RIGHT NOW. Do not wait!

Do your own pest control is about 1/2 mile down the street from me! They are actually really good. I had a problem with ants in my place and they sold me some stuff that worked really well. Got rid of the ants in about 3 days and haven't seen one since!

johnnyknoxville - I'm a home owner and I do my own pest control. I don't know if you've noticed it or not, but your average pest control "professional" isn't exactly a rocket scientist. I can carry a sprayer just as well as the next guy.

There's no way you'll ever get rid of any insect. Unlike us, they're limited by the resources of their environment that is used to reproduce. You can't run around and kill them all with a broom stick, a bottle of whatever, or your shoe. As long as there are bushes, corners, and woods, you'll always have insects, and in this case, spiders.

Best thing to do is get educated about them, learn to live with them and interact with them accordingly.
