Question Anybody Know Acronis?

I have a free version of Acronis that was supplied by WD and works as long as you have any WD drive in the system. It's been doing my backups fine and worked for recovery of the failed C: SSD a few weeks back.

Now, when I'm trying to restore to the new Samsung SSD, I get the following errors. One of them states to see the previous log, but I don't know where to look for that.

Errors claim not to be able to find Version 1, even though the screen shows the most recent one a couple of hours ago. Even if I browse to it, the recovery screen claims to not be able to find it.

How can I make it find Version 1 of this morning's backup?

Note, I get the same error no matter which backup I choose of either C or E, even the one that it found recently to do a successful recovery.

Their community forum pages list a number of questions about this with no real solution that I can find.

One of them point to this Log Viewer:

But when I run that, I see confirmations of successful backups with no real hint of trouble:

Once the scheduled weekly backups complete, I unplug the EHD.

The next week, before the backups are scheduled to begin, I plug the EHD in. Rather than waiting for the scheduled time, Acronis immediately begins one of the backups. I can't see anything in settings that would cause that.

If I forget to unplug the EHD and do a reboot with it still plugged in, the BIOS/splash screen ( with the F2 and F12 options showing ) hangs. Unplugging the EHD begins the normal startup.

So, this time when I plugged it in, the backup did NOT begin immediately. It shows as scheduled for 5AM tomorrow which is what I want. Why?

Also, considering post 1 above (which got no replies), is it safe to delete all of the highlighted files to clear space on the EHD?

I'm using an older, full version of Acronis TI Home. Never had this issue.

The logs I see are in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Logs

I would have just started a new backup when the prior failed.

Immediately making backups seems like it thinks it didn't complete the last scheduled one. There is a setting for that in my old version, if I run the Backup Wizard and keep clicking Next Button, it comes to a scheduling screen and if any interval is selected instead of "Do Not Schedule" then at the bottom is a checkmark box for "If missed, run the task at startup".

It seems like you are asking if you can delete the older date versions of FULL backups, as in each file is the entire backup, it's not set to incremental backup? If so then yes you can delete them as long as they don't contain any unique data where that is the only copy, that this new backup you're making will contain everything you want backed up.

I generally keep 2-3 backups at different points in time, to safeguard against something going wrong, and a few months apart in case some system or app update broke something and it took a while for me to realize it happened. In the latter case of apps, I try pulling the app folder(s)/files out of the backup file rather than restoring the whole partition backup, but it is a rare thing to do, don't recall the last situation where I did it.

Edit: I saw logs with dates in their names when I posted the above path, but when I ran Acronis afterwards, just now, (not making a backup, just to see where the checkmark was for "If missed, run the task at startup") then closed Acronis, it deleted the old log files and made one new one named afcdpsrv.log in the same folder.

This is a limited version. It works ONLY when a WD drive is connected, and even then, there are some limitations on capabilities.

It SHOULD be making full backups, each with unique data, but I'm not sure it is.

That's what confused me about the error in post 1. I thought I had only deleted older backups, but then it told me it couldn't find the current one.

What I've done for now is moved the highlighted versions to another folder. If it complains, I can move them back. If not, I'll feel better about deleting them.

The only relevant issue I know of is whether you are making incremental, or full backups. Incremental takes up less total space if you never delete the old (full backup) ones (or don't set it to do a "replace"?, if yours has these settings), and then the next incremental backup depends on the files from subsequent backups, but I like the simpler, full backups instead where one file contains all, or a series of files made at that time...

... in some cases, I have it split the backups to multiple files under 4GB because some systems need FAT32 to boot from a USB flash drive, then I can have it make the flash drive bootable to acronis, then put the backup on it. No idea how much of this the versions that come with SSDs support, I have maybe one or two of those but never installed them, figuring why when my older full Home does what I need *for now*.

Sounds to me like the backup you're looking for is corrupted... you may be SOL.

This sort of SNAFU is why its critical to TEST backups prior to actually needing them!

It's been a while since I've used the castrated WD version of Acronis, but I use several different versions on different computers, so it should be similar...

Most of what you have questions about are user controlled settings... whether the backup starts automatically when the drive appears, for example. There is also an error checking function (validation, I believe.)

You can delete all those old versions... but, as another poster mentioned, it really depends on if you are using incremental or full backup schemes. I ONLY do FULL backups... I don't trust the integrity of the incremental system. Looking at the size of your files, I think you are (... at roughly 80GB per backup file.) It is safe to delete full files... or move them to different drives, or whatever. To save space, you can also limit the number of stored backup versions... meaning, it only keeps the last 3 backups, for example. You can also set it to keep the original backup, and then the 3 newest (or 2, or 4, etc.) That may be one of the missing features of the WD verison, as I said, I haven't used it in a while, so I don't remember.

^^^ A lot of the settings are greyed out, not selectable. One of those is about starting on connection to the device and another seems to be about the number of backups.

It completed the backup last week and I unplugged the EHD. I plugged it back in again this morning after a PC restart but a few minutes before today's backup was scheduled to begin. It did NOT start on connection, but waited for the schedule. There must be something about timing before or after it complete, or maybe if it skips a week.

I found out sort of accidentally that the error shown above is dismissable for backups that have been deleted. If I delete five backups, I get the error five times and can dismiss it. As it gets past those five, it finds Volume 1 for the sixth backup.

I moved a number of older backups to a different folder temporarily, but after finding that about the error, I guess I can delete them.

I hope to be able to save no more than four or five previous backups, but I'm not sure even that many are needed.
