Anybody know about vacuum tubes?

Hey I am looking to use some vacuum tubes for a lighting effect on a halloween prop. I saw it done on someone else and it looked awesome. How do they work and where can I buy them? Anybody know?

I think what you're looking for are 'Nixie tubes' IIRC, they're more expensive....
