If you want to, go for it. Be prepared for a very tough, but potentially rewarding career.

I was considering it a couple years ago, but the Royal Marines (the real marines ;)), not the US version. I was extremely serious, but then the Iraq thing started, and I knew I couldn't justify killing for that particular cause. Many rationalise it by sayin - it's just a job, I do it, I get paid, I don't make the decisions - but I thought I did have a decision at that point. Hope I made the right one.

Believe me, they are both the REAL marines.

I guess Guadalcanal wasn't real? Neither was Iwo Jima? Sorta like the moon landings, I guess.

Woah, notice the wink icon guys?

British marines are very proud of the fact that they were (apparently) the inspiration for all the modern marine units including the US one. It was a joke about that.

I have a lot of respect for both units. I will edit my post if you really want.

It'd be a little late at that point...make the best of it, and try to survive till 2030. (theoritical end of the stop-loss program)

OP, what's your personality like? How well do you do with someone tellling you your every move? How about someone yelling in your face all the time? What kind of physical condition are you in?

The USMC isn't for quiet, easy going types. It's hard traiing, with what can be a hard life, and in many cases, a hard death.
I did my 4 for the Corps during Vietnam. My son just got out after serving 8, including 2 trips to the sandbox.

I was for 4 and a half years, until I got myself permanently disabled and medically discharged. (rupture of the achilles tendon while on a PT run). Best 4 and half years of my life so far.

I'm a retired Marine if that counts....;) I was in from 1984-2004. As far as being a good idea, of course that depends on who you ask and what you want.

That sums it up best right there. It'll be tough, but besides the tangible skills you'll learn, you also pick up some intangibles (self-discipline, dependability, confidence, integrity, etc.). :)

Have you seen the video of british marines jumping off a landing craft onto shore and a whole squad getting hopelessly mired in mud? It was hilarious, they didn't make it three feet from the landing craft before every last one of them was completely immobolized.
