It was a good entertaining movie but not very close to reality at all. I grew up in Alexandria, VA during that period and can tell you that very little in that movie reflected the Alexandria of 1971.
I thought it was good, a little melodramatic and cheesy at times, but it still made the point. The DVD I rented had narration by the two actual coaches, but I didn't get a chance to listen to what they had to say about it.

Its a great movie. Coach Boone is going to come to talk to our PE class since my gym teacher was at TC when this all happened and still keeps in contact with him which should be cool
<< Tell me how it was like back then at that time? >>
Ok since you asked. TC Williams was opened in 1965 with its first graduating class in 1969. It was an integrated school from the opening of its doors. By then Alexandria was actually in phase 2 of the integration of its school system with some busing involved if I recall correctly. In 1971 there were no segregated public facilities in Alexandria as was depicted in the movie by the students supposedly trying to enter a segregated facility. This was 7 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Alexandria was probably one of the more integrated communities in Northern Virginia at this point. We all drank from the same water fountains, used the same public facilities, sat where ever we pleased on public transit.
it was a good movie but some parts felt a little too "Disney" thus being somewhat cheesy. the one part that comes to mind is when they all bust out dancing on the field. sure, it gets to the point that they were bonding now, but it makes me wonder how close to reality that scene was portrayed.
