Anybody here using a 4850 with Ubuntu?

I can't seem to get mine working, I've tried everything I've been able to find on the web and nothing is working. I'm stuck at a weird 12xx X 10xx resolution when it should be 1680x1050, and when I tried installing the ati driver it shrunk me down to 800x600 which is awful on a 22' LCD. I ended up accidentally deleting half the drivers in there and now it won't even load, so I'm starting from scratch again. Has anyone here been able to get a 4850 to work?

Did you install the restricted driver that Ubuntu suggests when you first log in?
(I'm currently using this with my MR X1600, so the following is just based off of what I've read, so you may want to read more about it before doing what I say):

Disable the restricted driver and restart. Then go into the package manager and install EnvyNG. Envy will install the latest ATI driver and should configure things to a degree.

My resolution is normal but I can't get the AMD drivers to work, just those open source ones that are the default.

I tried this, and couldn't get it to work.

I found this on the Ubuntu forum:

I'm not sure what that did, but it worked and I'm now using the ATI supplied driver.

As an aside on this topic, I tried installing the EnvyNG package on my laptop (with a MR X1600) after removing the restricted driver and ended up with a blank screen after logging in. Had to stick with the Ubuntu provided restricted driver.

But glad to see that you found a work-around for your card.
