Anybody here use/have OS/2?

I was reading an article in PC Mag about then wanting to hear from users of OS/2 & got me wondering if anyone here used it & if so, what there thoughts were of it.

Google around. There are a few OS/2 user groups still in existence. There's software out there that will let you use OS/2 for basic web stuff these days. It's more of a hobby than anything, but you can still milk it and play around.

Yep, used in days of Windows 3.1, it was quite good then....sort of like Linux these days, both are excellent OS..but your favorite software won't be there...so u won't end up using it..

Had os/2 2.0 on floppies 5 1/4 floppies, IBM just didn't market it right. Ran it on a 386sx 25mhz, with 4 mb of ram, 100 meg hard drive and 256k video card, those were the days.

I used to run OS/2 WARP on my old 386SX@33MHz.

It included a good chunk of Windows' 3.1 kernel (it was originally a joint project between MS and IBM), allowing you to run Win 3.1 apps on the OS/2 enviroment, alongside native OS/2 programs.

Good days.

Speaking of OS/2, does anybody know why some motherboards have a feature "boot to OS/2"? That operating system is like 15 years old, so I can't figure out why a new motherboard would even have this.

I forget the details, but it had to do with memory addressing, I believe. It's a legacy setting. Why modern motherboards include it, I don't know. I recall reading a detailed explanation of why it was required a long while back and it made perfect sense. Not sure how much sense it makes to include it today. And I could be totally wrong about what it did, so I guess this post isn't all that helpful.

From a UseNet post:

"OS/2 Versions 3 and higher don't need that setting. However, some
bioses report memory differently than OS/2 can recognize. If you have
more than 64 MB but OS/2 only recognizes 64, apply Daniela Engert's
patch to OS2LDR (available on hobbes). I understand that this problem
is fixed in the more recent fixpacks for Warp4."
