i'm on a dell ultraportable - one of the smallest available. at first i had some difficulty with the size of the keyboard because i have relatively large hands, but now i find that i can type fast as hell on this thing - even faster than on my desktop. it has little to do w/ frequency of use, because i'm on both systems about the same amount of time. what could it be though, smaller spacing between keys? sounds pretty stupid, but what else is there to consider?

QWERTY was developed so the hammers in a typewriter would not stick together. All the most common used keys are further apart.
DVORAK (sp) is the opposite.

So, distance to the keys has everything to do with it.

i'm on my dell, it takes me longer to type because it seems i always end up pushing keys down too lightly, so they don't end up on my screen...

which is why I have a dvorak on my desktop, and a QWERTY on my laptop. I can switch back and forth very easily...but sometimes, even on the laptop, i can notice how far my fingers have to travel and stretch to reach the keys.

i think it's because on the laptop keyboard, the keys don't have to be depressed as much as a fullsized keyboard.

My notebook has a full size keyboard, with the travel being the same. The only difference is that the keys aren't as tall. So I can type as fast on my desktop and laptop.

My Sager laptop keyboard is beautiful. I have a lot of difficulty typing on friends regular keyboards or the mac keyboards in the computer lab.

i like the one on mine, too, although my mom's older toshiba has one that feels a little more solid AND has easier key travel, so i give it the award for great keyboard.

but yes, i feel like i type faster on a lappy keyboard than a desktop keyboard, and i think it's all about the key travel.

Same here. My Compaq Presario 1500T has a very nice keyboard but I can type mad crazy fast on a regular full size desktop board.

faster, on a normal keyboard.

Hijack: Why do some countries use words per minute to determine how fast they can type?
