Probably going there for Memorial Day, of course since we are touristy, we will want to be around the French Quarter.

Anyone here vacationed there recently?
So what is there to do in New Orleans. Any must see or must do stuff that you recommend?

Nobody?

There are 112,540 people on these boards and all of them have managed to avoid New Orleans?

Bourbon Street...Bourbon Street...

It's the only place I've been where "Show us your t!tties!" is acceptable conversation in a public setting. :D

you can do the tour of the plantations up the river. thats touristy. and the aquarium. and the imax. those are nice.

that is, of course, assuming you're sober during the day.

I only plan on being sober during the driving part of the trip.

There is Harrahs, that will be one night. Probably Bourbon Street/Frech Quarter thing one night.

Two words: HAND GRENADE.

Other than the Bourbon Street thing, I'd recommend doing one of the late night haunted New Orleans walks, during the day going on an air boat, and for a cool, chill out night atmosphere, try Frenchman St.

Last, but not least: Eat. Eat. Eat.

Yeah, hand grenades are pretty sweet. It worked out pretty well, too, because by the time you got to the end, there was the Tropical Isle place, and it was time get another one.

I was there for the Final Four... One place I didn't get to but wanted to see was the D-Day Museum (if you're sober enough!)--supposedly that's really cool. Also, you could try to catch a show at the House of Blues. On any given night there's tons of music pouring out of bars on Bourbon and other streets in the French Qtr.

Hand Grenades are good. I also highly suggest stopping by Pat O'Briens for a Hurricaine. Note also that you can use their bathroom for free. Some other places made you order a drink in order to use the bathroom (at $5 for a bottle of domestic!!). That may not be a permanent policy though.

Oh yeah, also make sure you stop by Cafe du Monde for coffee and beignets--it's touristy but good-tasting. There are a couple of locations. The one we ate at was on Decatur St. at the French Market.

Um, I guess that's about it. We were only there for a few days. Believe me Bourbon St. can eat up a lot of time :). It's surreal to order a drink and then just stumble around outside with it! Oh and if you're walking along and see a bunch of men looking up (who may or may not be shouting "SHOW YOUR T!TS!") chances are a girl is just about to pull up her shirt!

Good times...

Get ready to sweat. Nawleans is, hands down, the most humid place I've ever been in my life. The joys of being below sea level.

Most nights there are folks in the quarter (at least from Spring -> fall).

When you get to the quarter, get a hand grenade. There are two tropical isles on the main strip, one right on Bourbon, the other right off. They are said to be "New Orleans most powerful drink." But, you can't really taste the alcohol, and I tend to overdue it.

Pat O'Brians is a nice place to chill for awhile. The piano room is good, especially if you go real late, when you are really hammered. I've spent many nights in there with a couple groups each playing college fight songs of their hometown while singing at the top of their lungs. It's fun stuff. That usually seems to happen pretty late in the evening.

Next to Pat O's is Jazz Preservation Hall. Two performances a night, I think. It's only like $10 to get into a small room and watch some guys play genuine NO jazz. It sometimes gets hot in there.

The aquarium is cool. The IMAX shows a bunch of crappy movies, but they don't charge all that much for it. It's between Harrah's and the French quarter for the most part.

There is an art museum out towards Metaire that was pretty good. Haven't been to it in awhile.

If you are there on a Saturday, look into going to Abita for a brewery tour. It's about 40 minutes away (across the causeway bridge into Abita Springs). Free tour of their brewery (great beer; I was also their webmaster for a year or two) and then you can drink for an hour or two. My suggestion is catch the early tour since they just drop you off in the break room afterwards. Then, you could drink the whole time the next tour is walking around. Friendly folks here, too. There is a brewpub around the corner if you want some lunch.

Magnolia Mansion is where I stayed last time. Got a $89 rate from Travelocity. It's on St. Charles in the Garden District. Cab ride to Harrahs and the FQ was about $6, so not very far. The Real World house was about 5 blocks down St. Charles and was currently being gutted and re-done from the looks of things. It (the Magnolia Mansion, that is) was an old mansion with 12 or so rooms. Each was styled in a different theme (Vampire Room, Gone w/ Wind room, etc). The wife loved it and I got some points for that one.

I usually hit up Harrahs for a couple drinks. Go to the French Quarter and hangout for a few hours. Go to Pat O's and make an @ss of myself in the piano room having a great time. Hit up Cafe Du Monde (two blocks away) at 4:00am, then head back to the hotel for sleep and recovery time.

It's still pretty nutty. I was there a Saturday night a couple weeks after Mardi Gras and it was still one huge street party (Edit: Bourbon St. that is).

The boat trip up and down the Mississippi on a steamboat was nice. The aquarium is cool, Harrah's is good if you're into casinos. There's also a streetcar that you can ride round trip that takes you out of town and back again for a couple bucks.

And yes, eat. Awesome food there. I particularly enjoyed the Red Fish Grill, NOLA, and Bubba Gump's. Galatoire's was nice but a bit too stuffy for me.

Great locals restaurant is Frankie and Johnnies.

It's on Tchopotulous at Arabella (Arabella might not be on some maps...Nashville is next street over). Small joint with a bar and restaurant in the basement of a house. You'll see lots of cars parked out front.

My buddy that lived there for 10 years cites this as his favorite restaurant. I've been eating there for 6 years now and they never disappoint.
