It's nicer just to build a fire and sleep on the ground. All you need is what you're wearing and a match.

Going car camping this weekend in the Catskills (NY). I just bought a Eureka Tetragon 9 from Campmor. I think it was about $112. It's 9'x9'. Most importantly, it has a center height of 6', which I thought was worth the extra $'s.

i have a sierra designs jupiter cd 3 man/3 season. i think i got it for like $269 about 4 years ago. it has served me well in good and bad weather and is easy to set up and is very light.

unfortunately i haven't had any experience with kelty tents. they do seem to be less expensive than marmot/north face/sierra but hopefully that doesn't mean they skimp on quality. good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

See, this is part of my problem...I wouldn't mind geting a tent from Sierra Designs, Mountain Hardwear, etc, except for the fact that I just don't have ~$300 to drop on a tent. And really, even if I did, I just have a hard time justifying that kind of money for a simple little tent.

i bought a coleman 4-5 man tent... measures 10' by 10'... VERY nice... ceiling is about 6'6''... i've been VERY happy with it.. i think it ran me about 110 bucks.... but i've gone on about 30 camping trips.. nothing has ripped... 4 people sleep comfortably.. 5 people would be midgets.. u're right...... it's VERY easy to set up... only 2 poles that cross... so a guy that knows what he's doing could set it up on his own while the girl gets the bags out of the car :D... (or the other way around if that's your thing)

That's a little too big. I'm just looking for something big enough for 2 people & gear - withough feeling like I'm in a sardine can :p.

One more update:

After all this, I finally decided to get one, but not any of the ones listed in the original post :p After talking to one of my professors this afternoon - a guy who's been hiking for decades, and should know what he's talking about - I decided to get a Kelty Cyclone 2. He gets a deal on these tents through school since he takes a group out hiking as a summer class every year, and offered to help me get one if I wanted to...so I can get the Cyclone for less than $170.

As for my parents - it was their tent that bit the dust, after all; I'm just getting another one so my girfriend can come with me :) - They're probably going to order a tent when I order mine, but they're going for a cabin-style tent. Probably a Mantra or a Valhalla.

Thanks for the help, everybody!
