why on god's green earth would I suddenly have a dream about meeting somebody that I have neither seen nor heard from in probably 4 years or more?

Your dreams have no deeper meaning. You either thought about that person at some point during the day before, or something similar triggered that memory, and random firings of your neurons trying to consolidate your memory took it and ran with it.

The neurons associated with storing your memory of that person were suddenly accessed while you were sleeping.
I used to have a dream where I was at my grandmother's house, and there was this one white cabinet near a window. Every time you'd open the cabinet, a black panther would be in there, and it would jump out the window. I could do this many times, and each time, a new black panther would be in there.
I have never seen a black panther, so what would this mean? I think it'd be like trying to make sense of the bits and pieces of information that a defragmenting program comes across as it's putting your data in order.

Well, what do you think it means? Why might you think about this person in particular?

That sounds crazy. Haha, like really crazy. Dreams are just that though, things that sometimes can' be explained.

If you only you could project your dreams onto a screen while you were sleeping and then watch it later. Now that's a task for the future.

Dreams are just a random firing of neurons. Think of it as the mind's garbage disposal.

I think of most dreams simply as defragmentation for the brain (sometimes you even get those nice colors like you do when running defrag on odler versions of windows :))

Check out this site:

http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamdictionary/

I started having some crazy vivid dreams a few months back so in the mornings I would jot down objects that I remembered from my dreams. For nothing more than curiosity's sake, I looked up some of the corresponding meanings on this site.

Now, this site is probably just some wackjob's interpretation and that's fine with me. I take it all with a grain of salt. However, quite a few of the meanings have related to things that are going on in my life or were at the time of the dream. Give it a try, you might find some interesting stuff. Again, mainly for entertainment purposes, but interesting nonetheless.

I'd be curious to know what might have triggered it. The person I "met" in the dream was a girl I went to highschool with, and whom I worked with for a while too while we were both in school. The last time I *remember* seeing her was a maybe a year or two after we'd worked together; I'd taken a job at a different store that could better work around my screwy college schedule, and she just happened to come through my line to purchase something. That was years ago though, and other than when I woke up this morning, I don't even remember the last time I saw or heard anything about her, or that her name had crossed my mind. But I did know, very clearly, who it was in the dream when I woke up. Wierd.

I believe those are called hallucinations. You can probably get them when ever you want; you just have to take the right...ummm....medicine first ;) :p

An odd part though is that I normally *don't* dream. I know most people would say that I just don't remember dreaming, but it has always seemed to me that when I do dream, I at least remember that I dreamed, even if I don't remember much of what it was about. This is the first one I can remember having in quite a while.

You definitely do dream, but you don't remember it. If someone ran you through an fMRI while you were in a REM cycle, your brainwaves would be all over the place like everyone else's.

And it doesnt necessarily have to be that you thought about that person. Anything linked to her memory could have sufficed. The brain is a tangled mess, and untangling it could lead to the firing of what seem to be completely unrelated memories.
