I'm thinking about going to a chiropractor or accupuncturist...can anybody give me the pros and cons of each practice, or should i just go to a regular doctor?

a friend of mine, an MD (physical rehab) says, evidence CLEARLY shows that acupuncture and chiropractic medicine both have their place.

i don't know too much about acupuncture, but the only problem with chiropractic is some chiropractors try to make it a habit not treatment.

Drugs 😀

chiropractors are big for back and neck but not sure how they are on the other parts.

Chiro Yes.......... gret for my wrist & foot problems (also helps to have a competent practioner).

Acupuncture......... while I am sure it could be useful........... not for me .......... I hates the needles 😛

Cheers,

i've been going to a chiropractor for years and I swear by it. The only drawback is the first time you go, you usually feel worse afterwards because all the garbage that's built up in your joints over the years is released and it makes you feel worse. That's why many people I know say they don't like them. But give him another chance, i would suggest going once a week for a month and if you don't feel better after that, it's not for you. As for shoulder and knees, chiropractors can definitely help any joint, but it depends what your problem is, could you describe more?

I know quite a few people who get accupuncture anywhere from occasionally to regularly, and they all say it works. Not a miracle treatment, though, not at all.

I've been to both a chiropractor and had accupressure for my wrist. Both of them worked the same parts of the body, and spent most of thier time on my back and arm and fingers, as opposed to the wrist.

If you are having real problems though (lots of pain, or continued symptoms) you need a physical therapist of some sort.

I heard a quote that 91% of olympic atheletes use accpuncture. So, it must work to some extent.

I have lower back problems. I tried an MD, physical therapy, and finally a chiropractor. The chiropractor has been the best help by far. There are a lot of bad ones out there, though, so be careful and be skeptic at first.

Haven't tried accupuncture.

Not sure if you should be drawing medical conclusions from Penn and Teller.

Too many bad experiences with chiropractors to believe they are anything but worthless. My accupuncture verdict is still out, but the majority of the people in the Health Sciences program laugh at it.

About chiropractors: look for one that uses an activator and doesn't do a lot of twisting of the body. Also, look for one that has at least 10 years of experience. Finally, if you can find one that uses Kinesiology... that's GOLD.

1 out of 2 people I've known to go to a chiropractor became worse-off after the visit(s)
Last I heard, he was in a big legal battle over the injuries....

I doubt I'd ever go to one.... but who knows.....

After years of being an auto mechanic, my lower back is trash. I've been to general practitioners, back specialists, orthopedic surgeons, physical theropy... None of them helped.

Visited a Chiropractic clinic for a few months and not only did they help with the realignments, they tought me so much about stretching, excercises, etc...

A few years ago I went to a chiropractor because it felt like my hip was broken or something, it went on for a few days, I actually thought my freakin' leg was going to come unhinged or something...

I was on crutches when I arrived, the pain was almost unbearable. I was massaged and they put a tens? unit on me, then he popped my low back. I WALKED out of there, and was fine within a day.

I had accupressure a couple times, felt like a waste of time and money.

well, unless you actually believe in chi and all that crap, then accupuncture has no basis in fact whatsoever. some chiropractors are okay, but there are some that go a little too far into woo-woo land and think what they do can cure cancer. just research and pay attention to what they have in their office. stupid posters=bad man.

Chiropractors are great if you get a good one. Some just bring you in, crack things, and send you on your way. Stay away from those. If you get oen that knows what he's doing, etc. they can be great. ALWAYS get referrals though. I only go to a Chiro for my back/shoulder issues because I have some things that get moved out of place.

As you can see from the above responses, and also in my experience it seems like Chiropractors MO is to fix you up about 70% the first day but lay the story about how you've been like this for so long you really need to come back and see us 3x a week for a few months to get you right and then we can back it down to a maintenance mode... or you'll just have the same problem again. That makes sense, but, you have to realize they are going to push for as many visits as possible and you need to determine what you can afford and try and balance that with reality.

In my own experience, it did make a difference the first few times I went (I gave it a month, with 3 visits per week the first 2 weeks and then 2 after that),. Near the end it wasn't doing much for me (I felt about the same before/after) so I stopped. . My insurance covered most of the costs, but, even with a smallish copay, say 10-15-25/visit it adds up quick when you are going multiple times a week.

My wife also went because she's had neck pains forever. She stopped going for a few non-medical reasons. Just recently she decided to go back again. She was in quite a bit of pain (in her neck and back) before she went this round and after 3-4 visits now she seems to be doing a lot better. Our copay is closer to $30 now so it's a lot but:

If she went to a doctor they'd have seen her (1 copay) requested some xrays and other tests (another copay) scheduled a followup visit (another copay) prescribed some drugs (another copay) maybe recommended a specialist (another copay) etc and it still might not have done anything to actually fix the problem, just manage the pain. So it costs money either way, but, I think the chiropractor is better in her case. YMMV.

😀 I've had experience with both.

I used to have really bad lower back pain. One day, I couldn't get out of bed w/o help. That day, my wife took me to an accupuncturist. I was pretty nervous...We were visiting South Korea. The accupuncturist was Korean and couldn't speak English. My wife translated....Explained the symptoms.

That first treatment really helped. I went back every other day for a week. I still don't have any back pains.

I went to the chiropractor for 3 visits (back pain). Work great...but only lasted a short time before having to go back...I had to discontinue because of a long (8 month) trip. This was in 2003 (Chesapeake, VA).

I am now living in South Korea. I was suffering from limited range of motion of my neck. I visited the accupuncturist and got relief the first visit...

It works....I recommend the accupuncture, though...for lasting results...

😛

Thanks for all the replies. Anybody know why more insurance companies cover chiropractors and not accupuncturists?
