Ok this is the deal. I have a scuff and crack on my rear bumper cover. I was pouring over the net and found tutorials on how to repair the crack and re-paint a bumper. Dupli-color sells the paint with the PAINT CODE for my car in a 12 oz spray can (Woodland Pearl). The tutorials look pretty explanatory (i.e. sanding, prepping, painting and clear coating). Does anybody know much about this. I figure it's much cheaper if it at least looks good....

Assuming that the color will match perfectly. You can certainly do it yourself. The key is patience and more patience if you want a good job. Take your time with all steps you should come out with a decent job.

The only thing I don't know about is if your doing just an area of the bumper but the rest of the paint is OK. You sand just that area. When you prime and re-paint just that area won't the primer and base coat OVERLAP over the old paint.

I've seen people just use painters tape and newspaper to square off just the affected area and re-paint but they get tape marks because the height of the paint in that area is more then the rest of the bumper that has the old paint. They then use rubbing compound to remove it????

You would think that blending in the spot would be best. I would primer the spot and then work your way out from there with each coat of paint. You would be suprized how large of an area you need just for a small scratch.

Repainting the bumper will be expensive. Just the hardener for the clear coat will run you 35 bucks, not to mention a pint of paint and clearcoat. What is the alternative to repainting and/or spot repair?

If it's a small thing they sell little "touch up" kits at most autoparts stores. It's kind of like painting your nails (surely you've at least used nail polish on something) And it's pretty inexpensive.
