I am opening a small computer repair business and I want to be able to accept credit cards. I checked with my bank and they gave me a rate sheet listing percentage fees based on the amount of the sale and the monthly sales volume. My choice is, either pay a lot of money for specialized equipment and pay a lower percentage or pay little money for equipment and pay a high percentage (6-7%). It is all very confusing... Is anyone here dealing with a company with an easy to understand fee schedule and reasonable fees? I don't expect to be making a lot of credit cards sales. It is possible that I may only do a couple hundred dollars one month and five thousand dollars the next...

My local Taco-Bell and Steak & Shake just recently started accepting Credit Cards and Debit Cards. What they do is charge the customer a $.69 terminal fee for using such services. Not sure if that is an option to you, but possible something to look into. Next time i go over there i'll try and grab the name of the company its through.

I'm afraid paypal is not an option. Can you imagine trying to explain that to the average customer?

Many may not have an e-mail address anyway.

yeah.. 6-7% seems like a lot... how much is "a lot of money" to buy the equipment?

I believe a cardswipe machine is $500 or more. I just need one of the old manual swipers to create a receipt and then use the phone to call it in. This is where they charge an arm and a leg in their percentage fee.

When I had a shop of my own, I got a good deal on accepting credit cards and I wasn't generating too much traffic. I think it was 2.3% + 35 cents for swiping and 2.6% + 40 cents for punching it in. I also bought the credit card machine for $500 (3 payments of $133) and I was set. I think you should be able to find a good deal, you just have to call around.
