I'm trying to execute "emerge sync" and it returns an rsync error about rsync.gentoo.org

any ideas?

Try adding SYNC=rsync://rsync7.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage in /etc/make.conf. Then "emerge sync." Good luck.

That's a mirror at the University of Oregon (I think).
