Anybody here a financial planner? I'm thinking about becoming one (Career decision here)

More and more people are running into a lot money, and they need people to manage it for them. I am thinking about becoming a financial planner after I graduate in a few years (BA Business Administration, concentration Finance). What does it take? What do you like/dislike about it? What about the tests? Any other relevant info would be appreciated.

Other possible career options:
Own business (don't know yet)
Computer something (I dunno if I want to work 60+ hours doing IT)

The jobs/internships that I've had so far, I really like cuz they were super flexible to me. My last job, "webmaster" (I use that term loosely because I am hardly a master at making web pages), was super casual, came in when I wanted to, left when I needed. Boss was super cool (didn't know much about computers/internet though). I would really like to own my own business, because I don't mind working hard, but like to work when I want and where what i want.

However, I'm open to suggestions on careers. What do you do?

thanks

it all depends on your aptitude... for the most part, it's simply a sales job. You get paid either on a commission basis (similar to the old-line stockbroker - you execute a trade for someone, you get a cut), or more often, a fee based upon the amount of assets you manage, with certain performance bonuses for reaching return goals often common as well. It's not an easy way to make a living, and you have to hustle quite a bit, but it can be done, and can be quite lucrative. You might want to think about working in the brokerage department of either a bank, or mutual fund company for awhile, to see if dealing with the career is for you. I work in the field, and believe you me, people with money on account with you can be quite exasperating at times. Nothing in the world like having to try to tactfully urge a client to settle a margin call, or remit payment for a completed trade. And then there are days where a big company like Intel warns, and you fear even stepping in the door in the morning... definitely not a career for the faint of heart 🙂
