it has moving parts, but it doesn't skip b/c it has a massive buffer...32MB...so that is all solid-state, you'll never hear a skip

The bad: Pricey; can't record voice memos or line-in audio; no FM radio; must manually sync calendar and contact info; must install FireWire card.
LOL, that is so weak. :)

The iPods are spectacular. My bro-in-law knows a guy that gets all sorts of toys, so I might be getting his old 5GB Mac iPod for a great price once he gets a new 20GB version shortly. I should find out tomorrow. :D

I think the Mac versions can be converted to PC using the new firmware or something.

This is by far the coolest mp3 player out there. It is way smaller than it looks on the Apple site, it's shiny metallic, nice high res screen, the touch wheel works extremely well. Also, you can use it as an external firewire drive, and sync it with your Palm/Entourage contacts. That's cool.

I was unsure of this until today. Too bad my toy fund for the next YEAR was taken by my recent digicam purchase, otherwise i'd be buying one.

I usually watch the screen savers at lunch because there's not much else on, today they had the windows ipod on reviewing it, they said it works with the mac just fine.

I got my 10gb Mac iPod for my PC a while back. No problems connecting with Ephpod. Works great.

The PC and Mac versions are exactly the same in terms of size, features, and accessories (the remote is included with the 10 and 20GB). The difference is the Mac is formatted HFS+ and the PC is FAT32. As far as I know they can't be reformatted, but I could be wrong. If you want to use the Mac on the PC there are programs such as XPlay and another one I forget right now.

MrBond: It can definitely be used as an external drive, I think you can even boot off of it. What happens is you mount the iPod as a drive and then drag and drop files to it. If you drop an mp3 in this way, the iPod won't recognize it and you won't be able to play, but you will be able to access it if you mount the iPod on another computer. So whatever is put in this way is hidden when you use the iPod (except for vCards etc. that are dropped into the Calendar and Contact files).

gopunk, no USB converter - go to newegg and grab a firewire card for $20-25. The 5GB version remains the same from the original iPod (both Mac and PC are the same). The 10 and 20GB versions come with a new scroll wheel that is solid state and they also come with a carrying case and wired remote - the 5GB versions do not.

Lucky - there is a difference. PC version is FAT32, thus the ability to use it as an external drive on machines that don't have utilities like MacDrive of MacOpen that support HFS+

I'll try to find the link at some point, but I'm pretty sure that the Mac version can be converted to PC. I remember people conversing in a forum about how they would update the firmware, the iPod would say something about converting to DOS, and then it would effectively be a PC iPod. :) By the way, Macs have no problems using PC iPods because Macs can read FAT32 without a problem. For some reason, Windows does not come with HFS+ support.

With no moving parts(1), the iPod?s new touch-sensitive scroll wheel is less vulnerable to dust, dirt or sand and more durable. The touch-sensitive scroll wheel is designed to retains its crisp feel throughout the lifespan of your iPod. There?s even a clicker that makes a tiny clicking sound when the scroll wheel is moving.

It used to be a moving wheel, it is now a touch sensitive wheel, somewhat like the touchpad on a laptop - so no more moving parts on the outside. I bought the Mac 10GB in March - my wife refused to even look at it for 2 months. Then I made the mistake of insisting she use it for a few days :p I haven't seen my dear iPod ever since - she won't let me anywhere near it :( If you guys can afford it, by all means go for it! This is the best $227 I've ever spent (took a lot of amazon.com coupons, gc's and old comp. part sales to get to that price ;) ) The sound quality would probably not satisfy audiophiles but it is good enough for me. I find my car to be the best place to use the iPod (with a cassette adapter). With a 10GB iPod you have 2100+ songs literally in your pocket....no way you can beat that! BTW, I use Xplay. ephpod is better in some ways, but you need to buy MacOpener for about $40 to use that. Personally, I feel xplay is more stable and I can edit the id tags for multiple songs easily.

whoa... that's a pretty cool wheel. 10 gb it is then :p

btw, do you HAVE to use some software to sync? my digital camera shows up as a removable drive in xp, so i can just drag and drop files in windows explorer, is this possible with the ipod? or am i basically forced to have to install some other software....
