Anybody have one of those 4x6 printers?

I read an article in the NY Times recently where the guy said cost per print is down to a very reasonable $0.29 (depending on model). This could make a very nice Xmas present. Thoughts?

I was wondering if anyone actually has/uses one of these. My GF kinda wants one - it seems they are pretty expensive per print. If the quality is really good, I guess it is worth it.
What do fellow ATOT'ers think?

29cents per print is still expensive, I thought about buying one, but with the upfront cost of $150-200, it is just cheaper to use online print company like snapfish, ofoto, etc.

So does anyone have one of these? Snapfish has been good to date, but I thought it might be nice to have one of these around for printing pics from time to time. The price premium is not that high anymore(last Xmas IIRC it was like $0.79/print, yikes!).

I've got one, a Sony. For some reason its being flakey lately. Sucks since it makes good prints.

How is it any better than just getting a nice printer? That way you can print other stuff too.

theyre strictly for convenience sake. getting it done at walmart is cheaper, and will likely yield better results...

Glossy finish. Much better then any inkjet printer can do. Basically they're all dye-sub printers. Mine will lay down the cyan/magenta/yellow in order and then top it off with a glossy coat on top. They feel just like 35mm prints; look pretty close to

i have a canon i960 and the photos look great. it probably is a little cheaper to get it done at wal mart or costco but when i need something printed on the spot i have it right there. just a lot more convenient

I have an awesome HiTi printer, but at the moment, it is still not possible to beat the price/quality points of services like Ofoto. Sure, buy the consumables in bulk, you can get the cost down to about what it costs to go to the drug store and get prints, but what about your up-front investment?

If you are willing to classify the cost of the hardware as being for the convenience of not having to go somewhere and wait awhile for the prints, then they are awesome. Otherwise, my advice is to continue holding off on dye-sub printers until they break the $100 barrier, which probably won't be for another couple of years...if ever.

I have a Canon i850 and the prints are excellent. Ofoto can beat the quality of my printer, but not by much.

I paid $100 for my Sony dye-sub more then a year ago from CompUSSR

We just got the Epson Picture Mate for a X-MAS gift. We'll probably try it out just to see how it works. If you're a computing retard it's probably going to be simple to use. The recipient is a typical Windows dummy so we're hoping this is easy to use.

I just take the pictures I want and burn them to cd. You can take them to walmart or many photo labs to print them. Fuji and Kodak both make digital camera sytems that will make prints. They're on photo quality paper too.

we ordered the Epson photo printer and tried it out today. The pictures are amazing. Better than any printers I've ever used. Very easy to setup and use. They have a $40 rebate and a $50 visa card offer going on. So it was $199 - $20 coupon - $40 rebate and a $50 visa gift card.

Why do people seem to always equate these with $/print? How many of you using an in-home printer have never had a wasted print, or a test print, or any print other than the one you really wanted? Not advocating Wal-Mart/Costco in-store printing, but I have been told that WM online out-sources their printing to Fuji Labs. Also, for someone looking for more critical work, try whcc.com (White house Custom Color).
