GF found a 3 nights at Jamaica for $1150 per person (airfare included).

This is all-inclusive:
*free premium alcoholic drinks
*food food food & snacks
*snorkeling & other activities

I've never been to such a thing? Is all-inclusive worth it? Do they nickel & dime you with bunch of 'outside of all-inclusive' things?

Also this means you're restricted just to the resort... is that good? Wouldn't I want to travel outside the resorts or I wouldn't want that?

Anyone actually been with Sandals please chime in!

I've never been to sandals but I did stay at a Rui Resort in Mexico that was all inclusive. It was great, food gets a tad repetitive but overall worth it.

So all-inclusive meant you pretty much stayed in the resort the whole time right?

Just relax.. lazy... eat, drink, swim, water sports.. no 'adventure' or anything?

We've been to two all-inclusives, my wife and I love them. You don't have to worry about anything, you know you are going to be able to drink and eat what you want. We went to Sunset Beach Resort in Jamaica, and to El Dorado Seaside suites in Mexico, but never to Sandals. We did have to go to the Sandals in Montego Bay to go to one of our excursions, and it looked nice, but we didn't get to see a whole lot of it though. But the problem with that location is its right next to the airport. I mean right next to it. What location is this for?

I have a friend named Michael that went with his girlfriend Jan. Let me see if I can't get in touch with them about it.

I never understood the point of going to a foreign country to stay at a resort. Fly into Kingston and find that crazy laughing cousin of Bob Marley.

Sandals is great, but not all of the resorts are equal. Is this one at Montego Bay or is at Negril, Dunns River or Ocho Rios? Montego Bay is probably the worst of the bunch depending on what you want. It's loud and busy.

We weddingmooned at Antigua and it was an excellent experience. We ate and drank from 10:00AM till 2:00AM when the bars shut down. We scubadived once (included in the price) and snorkeled several times. We also played a lot of volleyball and bingo at the swim up bar.

If you are outgoing, active, and take advantage of the food and drinks, then it's certainly worth it. If you don't drink, and want to be reclusive and secluded for a vacation..not so much.

EDIT: The only time we left the resort was to go in town and get the marriage license. There were other off resort things, but we weren't interested. There was plenty to keep us occupied while on site. If you don't go off site there really are no additional fees that you have to pay. It's a non-tipping resort and you pay for nothing when you get there.

Very nice. So from your first hand experience, did you have to pay anything out of pocket for such all-inclusive resort? Nothing?

No 'this is included in the all-inclusive, but the better course/food/snorkeling course/activity is available for $100 more' BS?

I edited above. The only thing we had to pay for was a $10 or so fee to leave the country of Antigua.

I've never been, so I have no personal experience, but my parents go to one of these all-inclusive resort places almost every year and I hear about them every year.
they've been to Sandals for sure, I think another one called Couples...

They went to Sandals Whitehouse last time and didnt care for it too much.
Said the food was pretty bad (always cold), they flew into Montego Bay (north coast of Jamaica) and Sandals Whitehouse is on the south coast of the island, said it was a pretty long bus ride, through some narrow extremely curvy mountain roads. So, if youre considering that one, keep that in mind.
I think Sandals Whitehouse was an exception compared to the other resorts they've stayed at...obviously YMMV.
They really seem to enjoy them, since they go every year. I don't recall them getting nickel and dimed.
believe, me my dad would bitch & tell me about it, if they did.
:D
I think he got a sales pitch once at a resort place in Mexico, like for a condo or time share or something.
I don't know, he signed up for something 'free' or whatever. So, that serves him right.

Care to describe your typical day at the resort from waking up to sleep?
Wake up
Eat, drink, do snorkeling? What else?
What did you do at night (7pm-midnight)? Is it lively throughout late night? Are there dancing lounges, clubs and bars in the resort?

Is everyone just relaxed and the place just dead or is it lively?

Also what did you do day after day - just the same things over?

Sister n her hubby did sandals jamaica and loved it, but you cannot leave the resort. well you can, but you should not. personally i've done club med twice (turks and cancun) and loved it both times. It's camp for grownups.

Typical day was like this:

Get up at 9:00 or so and grab a cup of coffee and pig out at the buffet that bellied up to the beach. Start getting our drink on at 11:00 and then do any number of things - scuba dive, snorkel, lounge in the pool, exercise, crash on the beach, ocean kayak, ski, ect.

At 1:00 we usually grabbed lunch. Then it was activity time - volleyball, squash on the beach, bingo at the swim up bar, giant chess board (with 3 foot tall figures), ect.

Then there was more snorkeling time, scuba, ect.

Dinner was at 6 or so. Then starting at 7 they would have some sort of entertainment - casino night, fire dancers, comedians, karoke, open mic, ect.

From 10:00-2:00 we either hung out on the beach or hit up the jazz bar or dance club. We'd grab a burger around 2:00 before going to bed and then rinse and repeat.

With a wedding thrown in taking up a whole days worth our 5 days on resort were a blur.

If you have any interest in scuba diving, get certified before you leave so you can just sign up and go when you get on resort. No need to go through the classes and wait once you get there.

My wife(moreso than me) is very outgoing and sociable so we were always hanging out with various couples we met on the resort. We'd have dinners with them or hit the clubs at night. During the day the resort is pretty good about scheduling activities you can participipate in for "Sandals points". Get enough points and you earn your "Sandals" which are basically just little leather nick knacks...but it helps get you out of your room and off your ass to do something.

I think that's the whole point. You pay $1200 per person in order to take America with you, but with better weather and brown people waiting on you. I don't know that there's anything wrong with that, but if you want any sort of adventure or interraction with people who might lend some perspective to your life then you don't want to go the resort route. If you want to drink and screw and hang out in the pool, then you have your answer.
