I'm buying a car in california from a private party and driving it back to the east coast.
Maryland unfortunately requires a signed title before they will issue a temp registration of any kind.
Cali requires plates to stay in cali since it's an out of state transaction.
I think the one trip permit is my only avenue, but can't find much information on it online. Has anyone bought a car in californa and driven it back to their home state on one of these? How long did it take to get?

Thanks,
Vivan

what?

Here all we need is the dated bill of sale and that gives you 7 days to drive. Of course you need insurance but no special permit.

Are you sure that's not the case in the states you are looking at?

Huh? What are you talking about. I sold my car to a guy in AZ. He drove the car home with CA plates on it.

interesting. the guy i'm buying from is a former CHP officer and says that for out of state sales the plates don't go with the car.

Does CA have a temp tag process?

When I bought a car in PA, my brother in law picked it up for me. He and the seller took it to a local tag office, did the transaction there, and was given a 30 day paper tag.

california has a temp tag but it seems to be issued when all registration fees/use tax has been paid and final plates are just not available yet.

The one trip permit apparently exempts an out of state buyer from paying CA use tax, so that's why I was asking if anyone had experience with it.

Red NSX? You'll be practically invisible on the road - I wouldn't worry about it.

not red :D

Will he let you drive it home with the CA plates, and you can mail them back to him?

Might be worth calling the California DMV? Vehicle registration is a VERY state dependent thing. Whatever you do, try to avoid paying CA sales tax, as it's a good bit higher than MD.

I would not do that in my state, but some discussions I'm seeing online say that this is the norm for CA. Personally, I don't want anyone I don't know in possession of a car with tags that are related to me at all.

(edit)
Also...see this:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/reg_hdbk/ch25/ch25_3.htm

25.010 One Trip Permit (CVC §4003)

A One Trip Permit (REG 402) is available from the department and may be used in lieu of California registration for movement of any vehicle except a crane.

The permit must be posted on the windshield or other prominent place and must identify the vehicle being moved.
The permit must be obtained prior to any movement of the vehicle that would require it to be registered.
The permit is valid for movement of an unladen vehicle for one continuous trip from a place:
within California to another place within or outside of California.

heh, i was on hold with them for 2 hours yesterday before I gave up.

I'm pretty sure the one trip permit is what I need, It's just unclear what documents, if any, are required to get one, and if I can get one same-day.

Valid, signed title, bill of sale, proof of insurance.
You should be able to walk into the DMV office, wait 3-4 hours, (wait time may vary...or make an appointment well in advance) get your trip permit.

Dunno. In CA plates always go with the car. I don't care what happened to them once the guy drove the car away.

Ended up passing on the car due to a previous head gasket failure so I never got that far.

Who lets the buyer drive away with their plates? I've sold... I don't know, four or five cars, the buyer never gets my plates. Those are registered to me, and they stay here. The buyer gets a bill of sale and the title, all the back paperwork and maint. records, and that's it.

In california that's not the case. The plates stay with the car.

I've bought and sold a few cars in California, and have re-registered and titled my vehicles numerous times. Usually you keep the plates on the car, and then when you get to the new state and register the car into your name, they will take the plates.

To get the day permit you will need bill of sale and title. I don't think I ever was required to show proof of insurance.

Nope.

Going through the proper venues to attain and verify legal information is a huge waste of time.

Internet forums are the only way to go.

Interesting, didn't know that. I lived in California for about five years but I never sold or bought a used car there.

Same way in Washington, BUT if you're selling to someone out of state, you SHOULD keep the plates.

I sold my WA plated car in MD, filled out the report of sale on the DOL website (releasing me from any liability), but the new owner never registered the car, and I ended up having to go to court to defend against his parking tickets. Big waste of my time, just because the systems work differently in different states.

I sold a car from Cali to a guy in Mass - he drove it back, plates go with the car.

I would not be too worried so long as you have your insurance, copy of the title sign off/transfer, registration.

And why drive the 3K miles? Have it shipped.

car was an NSX, I was going to make a trip out of it with a buddy. Ended up passing on it though, new info came up after I had put a deposit down.
