I was just wondering about how much the retailers are marking up the laptops over thier cost. I can get wholesale pricing from J and R, and would love to get my hands on the Toshiba 5205-S705, when they finally get them. As of right now they are asking 2599.99 after a 100.00 dollar rebate from toshiba, but it is still preorder only. I called them, but they said since they haven't recieved them yet, they don't yet know what my price would be. So I was just looking for any knowledgable people around here, that might have some educated guess on what the wholesale cost of these are. I understand it likely varies by volume and maybe other factors, but even an estimate would be great. I mean are we talking 200.00 bucks or 800.00

AFAIK, Dell make about 10-15% profit out of every laptop they sell on average. So you can compare a similar configured system of the Toshiba and Dell and see how much mark up Toshiba make. The operating cost factor will be different though so keep that in mind too.

Yeah, pcs industry is becoming a low margin, high volume market. It is very hard to hold a high margin since big manufacturers like dell, HP are moving towards a commodity based strategy.

Higher end products tend to have higher markups. It's the low end that they don't make a lot on. Companies plan on selling a ton of them to make up for the lack of markup per unit.
