I have a problem that I don?t know if anybody can give me some suggestions even if perhaps I?m jumping the gun.
For reference this was my old configuration that was stable, with my misfortune that I could never overclock my CPU and get a stable system:
Abit KG7-R (4J Bios)
Athlon 1.4
Corsair 2x256 XMS2400
IBM 2x40GB 7200 on Raid 0 (as master)
IBM 1x40GB 7200 on Raid JBOD (as slave, used for backup)
OS Windows 2000 pro
The rest I don?t think is relevant for this question
New configuration
Athlon XP 1.4 (5W Bios) (Expecting an Athlon XP 2.0)
Corsair 4x256 XMS2400
IBM 2x40GB 7200 on Raid 0 (master/slave)
Maxtor 2x80GB 7200 on Raid 0 (master/slave Dynamic storage)
IBM 1x40GB 7200 on IDE (used for backup)
OS Windows 2000 pro
I tested the 2 additional ram stick before adding HD's or changing Bios and the system was very stable.
I then added the 2 Maxtor HD and changed the backup HD to IDE, everything worked fine, although I did not run any tests.
Then I upgraded the Bios to 5W, this is when the problems started. The first problem started when moving files from 1 raid array to another, the CPU would frizz, then after rebooting windows reported problems with the Raid (old raid on IBM disk's). After several attempt at booting without success I presided to reinstalling windows. No success there.
I was ready to do a fresh installation of windows, when I got a call from a friend and he suggested a crazy idea. To install windows on the HD that was installed in the IDE, well I figured that it was worth a try. So because I did not want to wait for ever to see what happen by installing windows 2000, I decided to use windows XP Pro using HP 1.2 drivers. To my amassment XP repaired the raid and the MB booted fine under win XP and as long as I don?t use files from the raid the system looks stable.
On the other hand when booting with win 2000 the CPU is running at 100% on many applications and causing the system to frizz at random. I realize that I will have to do a fresh install of windows 2000.
Are my problems caused by an incompatibility between the Athlon 1.4 and the Abit 5W Bios?
Is there a problem or potential problem with my HD setup, or is there another good arrangement?
Any ideas about the Windows XP miracle?
Sorry about the long introduction but I thought giving as much info as possible would be helpful with your comments.
