Anybody have a 4Runner?

jlee

I'm moving to NH next month, and I'm not going to drive my MR2 through the winter..I was thinking about finding an inexpensive truck (~$4000) to drive for a year or three, until I could afford something newer (maybe a 2000-ish Tacoma..not really sure yet)..

My requirements are that it must have a manual trans, 4wd, and extended cab. Torque is nice, too..so preferably no 4-bangers.

I dislike the body style of older Fords..not a fan of Chevy trucks either -- that leaves me pretty much with Nissan/Toyota and 97-ish+ Fords. I did find a '94 4Runner for $3995, though..122k, 4x4 V6 5sp..I'd like to be able to do some 'easy' off-roading..have the ability to pull people out of ditches (I lived up north for 12 years..I've seen many, many cars that have departed the roadway..)..etc.

So..anybody familiar with 4Runners, or have any suggestions for a vehicle?

Example of what I'm looking at
A friend of mine runs a used car dealership in NH, so I may be able to get a deal for something through him..

4wd isn't really all that great in the snow. awd is better. and so is a rwd car with traction control. according to things i saw on motortrend tv with a jeep gc 4x4 vs a rwd jag.

4runner is just a hilux right? (i think i've seen 4runners here, but they are all grey market imports from japan)

Good work vehicles, and the 3.4 v6 from the prado is a good torquey motor ( i assume this is the one you are talking about), tough as. Good off road/on the beach but not as compenent/easy as the prado IMO.

Most trucks I've seen are 4wd..heck, I'd be fine with a 2wd truck, since 4wd is rarely used anyway..but 4wd with lockers would be fun for offroad..

And no, there's no chance of putting snow tires on the MR2.. 😛

Edit: Here's the Autotrader page: Text

I had a '96 one, IT SUCKED... I didn't like driving it at all!
but it was a toyota, so the engine never failed on me...
very few mechanical probs too.... but i was extremely glad to
get rid of it in favor of a Celica 😉

No it isn't. True 4wd has a low gear and a locking center differential (transfer case). All Wheel Drive does not have a low gear and most often doesn't have a locking center differential.
