Got switched over to city sewer last summer, and I think it's about time I go ahead and get the septic tank drained and decommissioned. Anybody had this done before? Did you have it backfilled or taken out completely? How much did you pay? Any issues you ran across?

Gonna start calling around to get some estimates tomorrow, but just wondering what experiences we had around here.

When we switched to sewer we just left it. You could tell from the grass that it continued to drain for a few years but should be empty by now.

I work for a commercial plumbing contractor. Check with your local health department, they are usually the ones involved with septic tanks, permits and decommissioning.
The last one we did was a $140 permit, Pump the tank for about $250, and fill with pea gravel. Sometimes there is an inspection, the last few there was none. They may require that the top of the tank is caved in so it cannot be used.

To be quite honest, we would probably leave it for a while, but we are wanting to put in an above-ground pool. If the positioning of where we want the pool isn't directly over where the septic tank is, it's really, really close at the very least. We don't need a few tons of water on top of a septic tank that's not being used anymore. Could lead to some issues :).
