my friend was at her soccer game and this guy kicked her in the knee real hard resulting in tearing up the ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament ) on her left leg and have 3 broken bones.

she has surgery in 2 weeks. or so until then she is prescribed on heavy 1000mg drugs (hydrocodon) ? i forgot the exact name but its messing w/ her head thats for sure. and she is not feeling good.

is there anything she could do within these 2 week frame to make herself feel better? what did you guys do in this case and what kinda tips can you give her?

thanks!

Keep it iced and elevated and keep up with the medication. It's only two weeks, shouldn't be that bad.

well, my friend recently broke and tore just about everything in his knee playing basketball (receiving a pass from me, yaaay for guilt!). anyhow, he said that pain was horrible the first few days, but then it wasnt so bad, so he stopped taking the pain medication. i think his surgery was 3 weeks after it happened.

^^

And yes, I had a similar injury in 1999. No broken bones, but more soft tissue damage.

im dumb...meant to edit, not quote. :\

but if she can tolerate the extra pain, maybe reducing the vicodin to 500mg would have less side affects.

when i was taking vicodin all i got was a little tired and a little confused, but nothing too horrible. i guess everyone is different though.

Is she your gfriend? Treat her out to something nice, get her mind off of the pain and nausea.

i broke my ankle last january. it was not fun. I was on Vicodin and Percuset (if thats how you spell them). all they really did was make me tired and it did rid of a lot of the pain. the incision pain was like a knife being stuck in the side of my ankle. whenever iw ould feel it coming back i would take another pill. i didn't get a full nights sleep for probabl 2 weeks after my surgery. i would wake up 3-4 times a night in pain, not to mention i slept w/my ankle elevated. it was not fun, at all.

it happened on a monday and i had surgery on a wednesday. that thursday/sat i did nothing except play halo 2 and watch TV. the next week i worked from home. however i had to wait a lot to hear back from my manager when i cmpleted a task. so i ended up catching up on a bunch of shows.

it sucked cause i actually LOST weight. i was at my peak of strength from working out and gaining weight like i had wanted. since i couldn't workout for about 3 months i lost about 15lbs. it sucked :(.

Thanks, your post makes me feel sooooo much better about my ankle surgery next Wednesday!

I'm getting two screws into the inside of my right ankle to hold the tibia together. The injury occured almost 4 months ago, but it is still in 2 sections.

yea dude i have a plate and about 5 screws in there still. took a while for the recovery, but seems like yours isn't nearly as bad as mine so you'll be fine. the incision pain was just horrible man and i couldn't take the splint off for 2 weeks after the surgery. that was the worst part cause I got itches down there and stuff and couldn't do anything about them. and sleeping was a nightmare sometimes, waking up in the pain. just make sure you load up on the vicoden and percuset :). i didn't get that drunk/high feeling some people do, but it made the pain go away quickly.

My injury is bad, they just screwed up (military) and didn't fix it after it happened. See pic1, pic2, pic3

The doc said he would give me a prescription for T3's after the surgery. I laughed at him right then. I have a very, very high tolerance for all meds (Tylenol 3, Tylox, and Vicodin all have no effect on me at safe dosage levels). Hopefully the itching won't be as bad this time since the injury is older.

Try taking 1/2 or 500 for several days and work up to 1000. That may help. Or go back to the DR. He should be able to give something to replace it if you cannot handle it. I take it almost daily for pain and have taken 2000 daily but my body is used to it. Hope this helps.

I tore my PCL and MCL playing soccer in 2001. The most important thing (as others have said) are elevating the knee and keeping it iced. If there is too much pain, then of course, take the pain meds. Also, try to keep her knee (and leg) from moving as much as possible.....even if she says that the pain has subsided. When I got injured, it started to feel better after a few days and I could bend my knee and move my leg with much less pain than before. I then thought that my knee felt well enough to allow me to walk across the hall to the bathroom without my crutches.....it turned out that I was horribly wrong. Other than that, try to keep her occupied with things that she can do without moving too much. TV, crossword puzzles, reading, video games, computer (if she has TV-out and wireless keyboard/mouse), etc. so that she doesn't get too bored as she sits around waiting for surgery.

My doc started me on rehab 24 hours after surgery. Had a machine to constantly flex my knee to keep it from locking up. Hurt like hell because I could feel the incision stretch where the staples were but it all held together and I had full mobility pretty quick. Not sure if that applies here though with the broken bones. Regardless, surgery was nothing compared to rehab.
